epson 3020 randomly shutting off

I have a PowerLite Home Cinema 3020 3D 1080p 3LCD Projector that was recently connected to a new receiver (Integra 9.2 Channel Black Network AV Receiver - DRX-5.3) and it shuts off after what seems to be about 30 minutes of use. I did look at the user manual and found the instructions for removing and cleaning the air filter. It was due for a cleaning, but it didn't appear to be overwhelmed with dust (and I have the same issue with a clean filter).

The temp/bulb LEDs did not light up at all prior to shutting down (that I could tell) or directly after power up from a 'random' shutdown. When I turned it back on, after it randomly shuts off, I heard the fan spin up louder than normal. I assume this is normal because of the unit being immediately turned back on after a shut down. I say that only because I think I've seen this type of behavior when I've accidentally clicked the wrong button and forced the projector to shut off (years ago) and quickly turned it back on.

I do have about 4300 hours on the bulb and have not seen any warnings/messages to replace the bulb on the screen. Could the unit be shutting off to prevent bulb damage?

Is it possible that the video feed into the receiver is tricking the projector into thinking that there is no video feed since the receiver is taking over the video duties or is just a coincidence that I'm noticing this issue now that I have a receiver in place? Obviously a quick test is to disconnect the projector from the receiver and connect it how I had it prior to the receiver and seeing if the video feed cuts out after about 30 minutes, but I still wanted to start this thread and get some feedback.

Thanks.

Make sure CEC is disabled in both the receiver and projector. The HDMI control protocol is called many things from different manufactures and often causes problems exactly as you describe especially if you just installed a new device, IE AVR.

i'm going to check this out, thanks. i think this is a setting i need to change on the AVR since i don't recall making any change to CEC when the projector was directly connected to the cable box. now that i have an AVR, the cable box plugs into the AVR along with the projector.

i'm still going to test by taking the AVR out of the picture to confirm if this happens w/o the AVR. i don't use the projector all that often, which is why i can't remember if this is something that happened before the AVR was added.

It turns out that sleep mode was enabled on the projector and set to 30 minutes. Very odd since the remote doesn't have a sleep button. I turned that off and the projector has been running for over 90 minutes.

I read about CEC, EPSON seems to call it HDMI Link and it was enabled/On, but it appears to only come into play when power buttons on remotes are used. I didn't have an issue when turning the projector and/or receiver on or off, it just appeared to randomly turn off. In my case, it wasn't random, it was 30 minutes.

Thanks.

Glad you found your problem. What often happens with CEC is a attached device like a Roku will power on when you turn your system on and if not the device being used it goes to sleep in say 30min and sends a CEC command to shut off other devices. So its always a good idea to disable it unless you actually are using it to control other devices.

That is good information. I did notice under the epson HDMI Link settings that there were options for the projector to turn other devices on/off and other devices to turn on/off the projector (or something similar to that, I didn't study the options since I was looking to disable HDMI Link).

Thanks.
