I just got in my 2nd refurb 5040 and this one is finally up to par image-wise except the front lens has a few swirl marks. I ran my fingernail across and can't feel them, so are they scuffs that can be removed? Is there a layer of film on the front that has been removed that's left these marks?

I can't see any image degradation from the lens marks. Should I just keep it?

Should I just send it back and continue playing the refurb roulette game?

Thoughts? I can't figure out how this happened to begin with...

Hi,

Marks on the front element of the lens rarely affect the image at all; even those ugly scratches. If that’s the case with yours, then just leave it be. Usually we shouldn’t try fixing what’s not broken. Anyway, if it can be cleaned, you can do it using distilled water and 100% cotton swabs; dip the swab in the distilled water, roll it on a clean towel, clean the lens with circular motions from the center to the outside. Then remove the excess with a dry swab.

In case you didn't know, the reason you need to be careful when trying to clean a projector lens is that they have optical coatings that can be damaged if rubbed too vigorously with the wrong material. The optical coatings are more important to image quality than trying too hard to make the lens appear perfect. In certain lighting most projector lenses will appear somewhat foggy with apparent imperfections. However, this is just the nature of projector lenses. They are never crystal clear when viewed in bright light.

As with Photo and film lenses, most of the time scratches like the ones you have are superficial. There was actually an article where the person scratched up a photo lens and ran some tests. Basically if the image looks good, don’t worry about it.

I also say this as someone in the same lottery as you. I just received the second refurb unit today. Original had the PSU die and the next had a huge dust or hair on the right side. I’ll open the 3rd one and report back to see if we’re scuff buddies.

I tried cleaning it (outside the actual image area on the lens) and no luck. I tried some rubbing alcohol on a q tip and even that didn't work.

Guess I should leave it alone...?

Avoid alcohol unless it’s isopropyl alcohol, and in general unless there is grease on the lens. Yes, leave it alone.
