Epson 5050ub doesn't work with my Series X

3461 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  PixelPusher15
I bought a refurbished 5050ub from Epson in April. It stayed in the box until last week.

I have the Series X connected to a Denon 4400h. Up until last week I had an OLED connected so I know my Xbox, hdmi cable, and receiver are good.

The prior home owner had a projector setup so I started with that HDMI cable. I connected the projector, heard the Xbox startup, but just saw a black screen with HDMI 1 and No Input. I could access all of the Epson menus without issue but couldn't display anything from the xbox.

I ordered a new HDMI cable.

In the meantime, I connected the xbox to my OLED, set it at 720p, shut it down, and reconnected to my projector. I was able to display 720p content but if I went to the xbox settings I couldn't do 1080p or higher. If I tried those settings I would get the No Input message.

My new HDMI cable arrived. I hooked it up and was able to select 1080p under settings, but if Iblaunched Netflix, Disney, Hulu, or any game, even N+, the display went black.

I wanted to rule out my receiver so I connected the Xbox directly to my projector and got the same error condition.

I contacted Epson, explained the situation, and setup an advanced RMA.

My second projector got here yesterday. I hooked it up and had the same issues. I tried HDMI 1 and HDMI 2. No change.

This morning I called Microsoft. They walked me through a factory reset. When I got to the part of the wizard where you go through display settings I got the green screen of death. The MS support agent said it was an Epson issue and ended the call.

I was able to have an Amazon Basics fiber optic cable delivered same day. I ordered that and it just got here. I connected that to my projector and receiver and I had no change. I connected my projector to my Xbox and had no change. I connected my projector to my laptop and didn't get an image.

I got my first projector, and my old hdmi cable, and connected that to my laptop. I got an image.

What the hell am I missing?

I haven't tried that. I am getting ready to try that now. Thank you for the suggestion.

Alright, that was my easy suggestion.

Is this the fiber optic cable you are using? https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...efix=amazonbasics+fiber+optic+,aps,184&sr=8-3

It is directional so make sure you have it installed in the correct orientation.

Did you use 3 different HDMI cables? The original one by the old owner is probably not good enough but for any other HDMI cable that you tried, what are the lengths?

My assumption right now is that this is an HDMI issue and it isn't unheard of to have new cables just not work.

Try short 4K HDR HDMI connections (<6 foot) in a temporary arrangement from Xbox to AVR to projector. It almost surely that you are running too long a length without a active HDMI cable. This is a common problem. Fiber should work but as previous poster said, it is directional. The fact you got 720p working tells you it isn’t the gear, it’s the cable.

I had to got through three 50’ 4K cables at church to get one that would even work at 1080p. 4K was just black screen on all 3 original. They did work at 720p. One even required 720p 30hz to work. HDMI cables struggle at any significant length, but especially over 30’. Or as you add 4K requirement and HDR. Active HDMI cables are the solution. Cost more, but usually can get the job done.

Thats the cable, and I didn't take note of it being directional. I do have it installed in the wrong direction.

The original cable and its replacement were 25 feet.

I took Archae's suggestion and did the 6 foot cable that came with the xbox. That did display 4k. I am going to fix the direction of the fiber optic cable and try that now.

You two have saved my sanity!

This is just another chapter in my life about keeping a cool head when troubleshooting. I was so pissed that I didn't take note of the cable being directional. I didn't even know they made directional hdmi cables!

Last night I fired up my projector at 4k resolution for the first time. I am loving it. Going from Elac UniFi bookshelves paired with a BIC sub to matching PSA towers paired with 18" Full Martys has finally given me the audio I have wanted, and the projector has given me the theater visuals I wanted.

I still have a long way to go before declaring my theater done, but its usable now and will only get better along the way.

Thanks for all of your help. Last night I got to enjoy my big screen for the first time and I wouldn't have been able to do that without you and PixelPusher.

We have all been there and it may not have been humorous at the time but laughing about it later feels good. (y)

When I bought my first directional HDMI cable I knew the cable was directional and yet I still managed to run it the wrong direction initially and it took me about an hour to realize what I had done.

The cable has been working great for all of my games and streaming movies, but when I tried to play a blu-ray it suffered the same error again. I am going to try the 6 foot cable again and see what happens, but it seems likely that I may need an even better hdmi cable.

What should I change to?

That’s odd, actually. I don’t have experience with a newer Xbox but with Blu-rays you should be pushing less bandwidth through the cable than with 4K gaming. Is there some sort of frame rate/range match option on the Xbox?
