There is lots of information on the lamp going bad in the first few months; thought it would be beneficial for everyone; especially those wanting to purchase it but are apprehensive about the lamp going bad.

If you own the Epson HC 8100; please respond with one of the following:

1) Lamp gone bad within 90 days - specify hours on lamp (at the time it went bad) and it Epson replaced it; add any relevant comments

2) Lamp gone bad after 90 days - specify hours on on lamp (at the time); how replacement was obtained

3) No lamp issues - specify month/ year of purchase and current hours on the lamp

Thanks, folks!

Thanks, folks!

Bought mine mid Feb 2010.

Got it installed ceiling mounted sometime early last month, I've been very busy lately so didn't had the chance / time to really run the projector for extended periods before sadly it gave up on me with ONLY a total run time of 11 hours!!!!....happened suddenly one night when I got it powered for about a minute before the image / lamp went blank. Tried out all the troubleshooting options available from the manual to no avail.....

Am now trying my luck to claim warranty though I'm in category (2) Lamp gone bad after 90 days - specify hours on on lamp (at the time); how replacement was obtained

Cheers

Thanks, aaazhan. Epson should be sending you a new replacement lamp; let us know how it works out and your experience with Epson.

BTW did you cycle the lamp? Meaning when you were using it, did you turn it on and off like a TV? That is one known cause for a PJ lamp going bad.

Thanks, folks; keep 'em coming. Only 4 owners so far? I'm sure there are more. Come on!

Bought mine 5 weeks ago. It's my primary "TV" with 232 hours on it. Insanely dim today. Getting worse by the hour. Dang! I had an Epson 720p PJ that was rocking the house. Not happy at the moment, but lets see how they do.

Bought in March 2010, installed in basement after room was finished in May 2010

Currently at 65 hours after 3 weeks -- no problems.

Ran for 10 hours straight at 1 point when the PJ was at about 20 hours

Epson tech support is open 6 AM to 6 PM PST. Rushed home from work today - made it! Each projector comes with a "PrivateLine" credit card doodad providing a toll free number and a PIN. Mine didn't work, so I had to make a long distance call. Tech Support gave me a temporary PIN should I have another problem with my current PIN / projector.

We ran thru a few tests, and she said it definitely said there was most likely an early failure of the bulb. They'll ship a replacement off and I should have it in about 4 days. NICE!

The only bad part - I'll have to pull out the really old Panasonic AE-700 in the meantime (at least I can still see it).

Great job Epson!

I was interested in purchasing the 8100. But, after reading about the lamp failures here and elsewhere, I decided to call Epson.

I called customer support and spoke to a rep that was unaware of any lamp problems with this projector. He said he had to confer with an associate. Milton came on the line and acknowledged that there had been lamps reported as failing and those were replaced under the 90 day lamp warranty.

I asked him, what about lamps that faild after the 90 day warranty period. He said that they would be replaced if they had up to 500 hours on the lamp. I told him about one person who only had 750 hours on the lamp. He then stated that they would replace the lamp on a case by case basis.

I than asked if there were any manufacturing or cooling issues with the lamps or the projector, and he denied that there were any.

NSNQST: Could some of the problem be with turning the projector off, then on before a cooling period, or handling the lamp with their fingers where finger shouldn't touch (if this is a new projector this shouldn't be the case), or poor ventilation around the projector?

I'm not convinced that I should buy this projector.

Thanks

Premature lamp failures can occur with any projector. The fact that Epson stands behind their product even after the 90 day period for lamps speaks volumes to me. Also, most of us are enjoying our 8100's with out any problems. Those that have problems post, and as you can see, Epson seems to be taking care of them. If you are still concerned, you can always buy a bulb warranty from Mack Warranty who offers a good warranty through this forum.

Mine just went after 5 months and about 500 hours? If I had to guess the hours. Glad I sent in the registration form they found my information quickly. For the last 2 weeks the projector didnt seem as bright when it first started up but when its dark you wouldnt be able to tell. I have mine on a UPS and excellent airflow.

Epson tech support was excellent and like the above poster they said it sounded like a premature bulb failure and the replacement should be here in 4 days. I'll be sad without my projector but I am happy to see epson stand behind thier products.

Thanks badgerpiolt.

I'm a little closer to a purchase.

This is a little off topic. I've got an Infocus SP4805 that I bought in 2003! And the lamp is still going. I wouldn't even think of replacing it except for the stupid light tunnel issue. I used to use it most every night for 2 hrs or so, until the light tunnel failure became too annoying. Still good for 4:3 material though.
