I am not very happy with the FI so far, it doesn't seem very effective compared to the results on the same signal on my Sony XBR tv.

And that's even more frustrating since I returned the 3500 bought at $899 thinking I would be happier overall.

Yeah.
I tried out the 3500 and returned it due to TBE (triple ball effect) on sports with FI engaged. With it off it had motion blur.
Decided to keep the Sony HW40 which is flawless with motion.

The 3500 doesn't have DFI.

Right. To be clear, I was saying I'm not happy with the quality of FI on my 3700, which is made more frustrating by the fact that I returned the 3500 to get the 3700 and basically paid an extra $600, and lost the 2 pairs of free 3D glasses. I hope a future firmware improves it.

would the the 3700 be a step up from the epson 8350?

Not sure if I want to invest in a 5040 just yet seeing how some of the UHD/b.R. players are hit or miss at the present time.
It depends if you video-game on the projector and whether you need a little more brightness or prefer higher contrast.

The 8350 is a great gamer projector with impressively low input-lag, but there's a chance the 3700 will have poor input-lag (although Epson has been doing pretty well recently with at least a couple different models, the previous 3000/3500/3600 were slow).

The 8350 will likely have slightly better native contrast around 700:1 and its dynamic-iris works pretty effectively while the 3000/3500/3600series have closer to 250:1-350:1 native contrast and I think the word so far about both the old and new versions (3100/3700/3900) is the dynamic-iris makes less of a difference compared to the 8345/8350's dynamic-iris.

The 3000/3100series should be at least a little brighter in all brightness modes compared to similar modes on the 8350, but it'll be about a 30%-40%difference which is noticeable but not huge like a 200%-300%difference can be.

If you're interested in the frame-interpolation or 2D-3Dconversion or viewing in a room that usually has some light sneaking in, the brighter 3100/3700/3900 projector should usually be a better choice, but the 8350 is hard to beat for dark-room viewing or for gaming under $1800.

Was there a noticeable PQ difference going from 3500-3700?

I want to upgrade my 8350 but with the new line, 3700, 3900 and now the 4040 it makes it a tough decision. I like what i read about the faux 4k but also hear about all the issues. So iam kool with going 3700/3900 and waiting it out for a bit. I have yet to read reviews on the 3900 or 4040.

Honestly I don't think it's fair for me to say as this is my first projector and I have no idea how to properly do the settings.

I will say that out of the box yes the 3700 looks better on the equivalent Cinema mode and Low FI engaged on the 3700. But I haven't changed anything else, and the difference isn't dramatic enough to justify the $1499 price vs the $899 I had picked up the 3500 for. Unfortunately the 3700 didn't arrive fast enough and I only had a few hours to compare and decide.

I would also say I am a more than average demanding critic for AV gear. I certainly find the color reproduction to be very nice but the focus is terrible compared to my LCD 4K TV. I expected that, but was still expecting a sharper image and just can't get it where I want. I know it's optically centered to the screen so I am hoping a review will say what functions to enable/disable and setting numbers for the various options.

Do any of you guys have focus uniformity issues?
I'm using it close to the end of it's vertical lens shift and i find i can either have the top sharper than the bottom or the other way
Had the same problem with TW5300 / 2040...

Hi,
I've just RMA the EH-TW5300 / 2040. One corner totally out of focus. In wide zoom up and bottom image part in different focus. Frame interpolation not working - 3 seconds ok and after stutter/jerkiness for one sec and again... (no firmware update for European version)
Terrible product. Not to mention really noisy fan. Service wrote unrepairable so I get money back and I was thinking to get some other PJ. Maybe TW6700 / 3700 but I am a little bit suspicious about Epson products... Is there some other comparable product for the same money?
Thank you in advance.

Wow thanks! Mine was off too. I set it to Preset 1 and it makes a HUGE difference in sharpness! Haven't tried the other 4 Presets yet.

However, the Frame Interpolation still kinda sucks on any setting. I don't know if some other setting or just that Epson's FI sucks compared to Sony. It looks like it is skipping frames. Not sure how else to describe it?

I love my 3700. I am finally done with searching for something else, this projector is what i wanted - perfect for both 3d and 2d, very bright on white 1.1 gain screen and it has black levels that i can live with.
Plus at this price point i can run it for 1-2 years and discard later with minimal regret when 4K devices will drop to same price range or 5040 will get new version with proper 18Gb chip to support all proper modes.

FI on this Epson is fine, just keep tuning it up. Colors are great and Eco mode noise is also good. I do not say 45ES Sony is not better :) - but 3700 is very close to it in all aspects, for $500 less.

I'm in the same boat. I've been waiting for BB Canada to carry the 5040, but STILL not available. The CAD pricing of the 5040 is turning me off as well as a proper 18gb chip and numerous device connectivity issues noted in the 5040 thread.

I bought a 5030 this past June but returned it 3 weeks after the 5040 was announced. So I have been without a projector for almost 5 months and it's killing me to continue to wait. Maybe I'll pass on the first generation 5040.

I'm slowly changing my mind and going to the 3700. I do game occasionally so the input lag is a big deal for me. I guess I'll wait and see what the true numbers are in this area.

yes the FI does NOT work - still the same issue as 2040. I believe it works only at 24Hz with BR players but if you use a PC with 60Hz connection the FI stutters.

Anyway the focus (corner to corner) is better comapred to 2040 and also fan on ECO mode is acceptable.

So can you provide the settings you are using that has Frame Interpolation looking fine? I have watched several movies on Vudu on a Roku 4K, as well as from Apple Movies on the latest Apple TV, and several from my Arris cable box on TWC. On ALL of them, the FI skips/jitters various amounts. I have tried all 4 of the options under FI, and it still happens quite often.

On my Sony XBR 4K TV, if I put FI to Smooth, there is very rarely any skipping/jittery look. The other settings also remove most of it too, but I actually like the SOE of the Smooth setting. (Heresy, I know)

I'm just shocked at how big of a difference there is between my Sony (and Samsung) TVs, and this Epson projector in FI quality/effectiveness.

I haven't actually tried a Blu-ray disk, have only been watching streamed movies and a few shows recorded from my TWC cable. Will be really disappointed if its only useful at 24Hz. I rarely buy discs anymore and mostly stream. And the few discs I do buy now are 4K vs. regular BD.

I really have no idea what do you talk. I use 2 sources - i watch movies from WD TV streamer and TV from Homeworkx TV tuner. TV tuner generates 60hz 1920x1080 content that does not use FI, as i understand, as FI does not work on 60 frames per sec.

But WD streamer plays standard movies that do 24 frames and those for sure use interpolation. Good test i use for that is a opening scene from 'Apocalipto' where pig runs through the forest. I have FI set to 'low' and have not done anything else. You need to make sure that processing is set to 'fine' also, not 'fast'. It is under 'signal/advanced' menu. Not sure what else to suggest. works fine for me.

or may be my standards are lower than yours, but nothing jerks on the screen or jitters.
