Similar to the Hitachi Home-1 I own, which I like a lot. I run a huge screen 140" (Behr Silverscreen painted wall) with the relatively new lamp (still under 100 hours).

Great picture with solid colors. Of course there is SDE - so choose your seating distance/picture size based on the level of SDE you can endure.

Beautiful DVD picture, and good HD rendition, though certainly a true HD display has more clarity and depth.

Pretty much what grinchy said. I have no experience with other pj's, but I'm very satisfied with mine. I chose it because of the price, 16x9 native res, component inputs, decent lumens, and relatively inexpensive lamps. Also has a small built-in speaker in case you don't have an audio system hooked up. SDE is not an issue unless you sit too close, or you like staring at the grid lines instead of the image (which you shouldn't be doing anyways ).

It also passed an unintended drop test - it was accidentally dropped about 3 feet onto a carpeted floor, and it still works fine :p

I use a Epson home 10 + and I love it. 92" screen viewed from 14' away. That is about as close as you can get to any 848 X 480 projector with that size screen. See projector central for a viewing distance guide for all projectors. Major bonuses are extremely quiet and cheap replacement bulb.

I previewed one at a HT store in my area, I streched it out to 130 inches sitting 13 feet back, SDE was visible then , takin it back down to about 90-100 it looked pretty good, a nice entry level for the price, I also previewed the 4805, biggest I saw that one on was 100 inches but at 100 it looked better than the Epson did at 100, in my opinion that is

The "rule of thumb" is to sit a minimum of 1.5 times the screen width. Lower resolution PJs require even more distance. Even 8' is too close for a 92" wide screen, or did you mean 92" diagonal? For an 8' viewing distance, your screen should be no larger than 64" wide. A 92" diagonal 16:9 screen is 80" wide, so your minimum viewing distance should be about 10 feet.

Save your money for the 4805, it's quieter too.

I have the Epson Home 10+, and have about 400 hours on it since November. I bought it to replace a RPTV that went out on me and I couldn't be happier. Its cheap, quiet, the bulbs are cheap and the warranty is great.....2 years overnight exchange! I sit about 13' back from a 76" diagonal screen and SDE is not noticeable. I will say that the de-interlacer is pretty bad, but as long as you have a progressive source the image is wonderful. The short throw and lack of lens shift can also be an issue if you want to ceiling mount it......I use mine on a coffee table.

SDE is completely a personal matter. There are guides, but some find it objectionable, and others not at all. The best way to determine your level of acceptance (or rejection), is to demo a projector and move closer/farther from the screen.

If you're an 'experience' type, who likes big pictures, it'll probably be less objectionable. If you're a 'purist' type, who likes ultimate clarity, it'll be quite objectionable. PJ's are like cars in a way - they make lots of models and let the customer self-select what they like and can afford.

I'm a big picture guy who wanted movie size images at home. I self-selected basically the cheapest decent contrast LCD PJ I could find and am very happy. I watch mostly 12 feet wide from 15 feet seating and find the picture excellent. Good DVD material is superb, and "HD" material is even better. Sure there is SDE (and I bet quite a few people would find it objectionable), but a few minutes into the content I forget all about it - because the experience is what I'm after.

We are an Epson and InFocus ScreenPlay dealer and we demo these side by side frequently. The Home 10+ is a great choice if you are susceptible to rainbows on DLP products or when a short throw is needed. The SDE really isn't too bad. For the price point, it's a good entry level home theater projector that probably doesn't get the attention it deserves. For those members in the L.A. area, you are always welcome to setup an appointment with us to check these projectors (and others) out for yourself.

I own a Powerlite Home 10+ mounted on my ceiling on a 92" diagonal screen (80" wide) and the distance between the screen and the seating position is about 10 feet.

I still thing there's something wrong with either the distance or the actual height of the screen, as apparently it is set too high, that is, it seems as if it would look better if it'd lower a little more.

Does anyone know any rule of thumbs for the screen height?

I have the Home 10 and I believe it is a great PJ for DVDs. There are better models out there for HDTV, but for DVD's, I don't believe you can get much better for several reasons:

1. Out of the box performance is exceptional in Theater Black mode. I did not need to tweak anything based on the Avia calibration disc.

2. Lamps are cheap for this model- MSRP is only $199 versus $399 on average for most other models.

3. Throw distance. Due to soffiting in my basement, I needed to have the PJ only 9 feet from the screen. No problem with the Epson. Zoom is 1.5x and is 1.2x on many other PJs.

4. Screen door is less on this one than any other reasonable LCD I have seen. Per ProjectorCentral, you only need to be about 1.6 from the screen. With most others in this price range and resolution, they recommend 2.0.

5. Epson has great warranty service and from what I have read, a great policy on dead or stuck pixels as well.

By the way, HD performance is good on this model, but better on HD resolution models (Duh!).

I bought my epson home 10 last june of 2004 and up to now I am still enjoying watching dvd's. I have a 92" screen made with just blackout cloth and about 14-15 feet viewing distance. I only use theater mode and that will save me a lot of hours from my existing bulb. I like it because it's a short throw pj(projecting a bigger picture with a shorter pj-screen distance). To me I don't have no problems with vertical banding, rainbow effect (this pj is lcd anyway) and even the screendoor effect (only when you are too close to the screen). PLUS I bought my epson home 10 last year for a litte over $800 including tax from a local store because it was on a closeout sale and they were introducing then the new epson home 10+

For those of you projector owner's, can you tell me what is the height (distance from the floor to the bottom of the screen)?

I currently have my Epson Powerlite Home 10+ mounted on the ceiling on a 92" 16x9 screen, where the screen distance from the floor to the bottom of the screen is about 3 feet. The viewing distance is about 11.5 feet and I still thing the screen is either too close or maybe not in the right height.
