ESPN-HD Dolby Digital 5.1 Question

1120 Views 19 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  RonAuger
Does anyone know if D* broadcasts ESPN-HD in DD 5.1? Last night's Pistons-Pacers game came in on my receiver as Pro Logic (2/0 not 3/2/1). A buddy of mine has Charter cable in CT and he said his receiver showed the same game was broadcast in DD 5.1. Is this possible?

ESPN HD does not do 5.1 they do circle surround. Its a 2.0 encoded system similar to Dolby Pro Logic II. At this time ESPN has no interest in changing formats.

ESPN does not do 5.1. The best you'll get from them (at this time) is 2.0, and Circle Surround. Do a search for Circle & ESPN for details.
I did the search and found some info but did not find any setup info.

What are people doing to decode this? Analog only or can I use digital output form STB?

What is the best format used to decode, PL, PLII?

Don't waste your money, it's not worth it. If you absolutely have to have it, try it out on a PC soundcard first.

Another confused ESPNot-HD customer thanks to their deceptive web site.

Another idiotic post by Stooge. Where exactly does the poster say he read the website and therefore believed ESPN broadcasted in DD5.1? Where does the poster say he was led to believe by ESPN that ESPN HD uses DD 5.1. Fair criticism of ESPN by the bashers is negated by their efforts to find evildoing by ESPN where it does not exist, IMO.
Like somebody said in another thread: "CS is the perfect complement to ESPNHD streched content"

Aha. See, I think it is fair game to criticize ESPN HD if you think they should use DD5.1 or that they don't have enough true HD programming. What is unfair is when guys like Stooge try to demonstrate them to be deceitful liars in situations where it does not fit. Don't like CS, fine. To say that some poster who never even says he read the website was tricked by the language of the website into believing they use DD5.1 is nonsense.

I have to agree with you on that one. ESPN has never claimed DD5.1 or HD content when they do streched SD.
JoeHT: that (or any other fact) apparently doesn't matter to fourthstooge when he sees an opportunity to slam ESPN HD.
This is getting too easy. The way you guys pop a spring over this stuff is comical. Pavlov would be proud.

Nice comeback. Say something stupid (and wrong)and then pretend you are trying to get a reaction. I am done with you. Noting your incorrect statement is getting to easy.

Fascinating.
Not pretending anything. I honestly thought he might have been confused by the web site that makes it look like they have DD5.1. True, he never said it explicitly, but I raised it as a possible source of the confusion. Why that should cause you such deep pain is beyond me. The level of hostility over something so trivial is remarkable.
For someone to mistake CS2 for DD would be a travesty.

Obviously not. The rest of the AVS forum public are still having to weed thru both of your inane banter to get to relevent posts. Go ahead and point out mistakes in others posts -- just keep the mudslinging no higher than knee level, please.
