Hello all,

So I'm sitting here in front of my HDTV watching ESPN's Playmakers and their logo/bug is half on half off in the top-righthand corner of the screen.

As I've been tinkering with the set off and on for a while I'm not certain my overscan is set right. I know every channel looks fine and everything in general is where it's supposed to be (ESPN's bottomline is completely visible, Fox's sports banner looked fine Sunday, 2.35 ratio movies in HD are centered, DiscoveryHD & HDNET logos are in the right spot, etc.)

So, the question .. if anyone knows.. Is that bug >supposed

Just curious. Either way, guess I might have to tinker and adjust a bit more.

Thanks.

Oh, I'm watching via DirectTV's ESPNHD on a Hughes E86.

That's a problem on the ESPN side of things. Check back to their first week and many people talked about it.

Good. I thought I was having overscan issues.

Thanks for the heads up.

Take care.

yep you are correct - i have a projection 65" that cuts off the logo but my 42" plasma has the whole logo. It is cool - the first time it was an ESPNHD logo as well.

I get only the bottom half of the logo on my XBR400, but on my front projection system I get it all. In fact the top of the logo is almost an inch from the top of the picture.

I think that the problem has to do with the 720p --> 1080i conversion in the STB's (I'm using a Toshiba DST-3000). When I switched to SD using the "Full" mode on my Toshiba HDTV, the entire bug was visible.

However, in 1080i mode, I only see the very bottom of the bug. IIRC, I had a similar issue with last year's Super Bowl. The scoreboard at the top of the screen was partially cut off.

I have a Samsung SIR-TS160 set at 720p feeding a Samsung DLP (native 720p) and I still had the same problem. Lost the top 1/4 of the bug.

Yah.. nothing to do with the sideconversion... it's a screwup by them in my opinion, and they don't seem to care about it.

Then how would the entire bug appear completely when watching the program downconverted to SD and completely disappear when watching the program in HD?

The entire top of the picture has to be in the signal when it reaches my STB. Otherwise, I wouldn't see the bug in the SD downconvert.

Thanks ExcelsiorWV for asking this. As a new recipient of ESPNHD (via cable on a Samsung DLP), I was wondering the same thing when I saw this last night. While I don't understand why it is okay on non-RP sets, it is good to know it isn't just me.

The ESPN logo is applied separately in it's own Master Control room for each broadcast: SD and HD. This is different than the truck feeds where the game bug is applied on site and has to be formatted for both feeds. It sounds like someone placed the bug too far out of the "safe title area" of the screen. You can get away with crossing the line, but it sounds like the whole bug is outside that area. FOX places their new score strip halfway out of the safe title area so it appears as close to the top edge of the screen as possible without geting cut off by home viewers' overscan. It sounds like the ESPN-HD feed bug got pushed a little too far to the limit.

Is this a recent thing you've noticed, or has it been this way for you since the series started? ESPN upgraded their backup UPS system recently and several graphics and pushback effects (and even some equipment) ended up all screwy power was restored. They're still tweeking some of it, so they might not know about the problem yet (pro monitors show a little more video area than regular TVs and most of the systems folks and managers see ESPNHD letterboxed on SD TVs in their work areas or offices. It probably can't hurt to dash off a note about it to bring it to somone's attention.

Thanks for the reply NetworkTV..

I was kind of hoping you'd chime in when I first posted the question.

It's been that way since the start of the series for me as well. At first I just chalked it up to either ESPN being new to the HD world or my overscan not set correctly.

But when I saw it again on the 3rd episode after I thoroughly calibrated my set to where every other logo/bug seemed in the right spot. I was curious if it was me or them.

It it's >supposed

Anyhow, thanks for the responses all.

I'm not talking about seeing on the SD feed and not seeing on the HD feed. I talking about seeing it when I watch the HD feed through the S-Video out and not seeing it when I watch the same HD feed through the Component Out. I don't disagree that the bug is probably too close to the safe zone, but I have to believe that my STB is compounding the problem during the 720p --> 1080i conversion.

Dear ESPN-HD:

Your HD bug in the upper right corner is slightly misplaced on my screen. Please move the bug about two inches up to allow the bug to completely disappear from my screen. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
