Nice family movie to watch, released a week prior to Bloody Sunday, another film set in Ireland. Evelyn is the story of Evelyn Doyle, a little girl who was at the center of one of the biggest custody cases in Irish law. She is played by Sophie Vavasseur. Pierce Brosnan plays her father.

Evelyn's scene near the end of the story is the capstone of the movie. Out of the mouth of babes comes wisdom and understanding far beyond her years. Some of the reviewers (or naysayers) have complained about the performances or lack of performances by Brosnan and Julianna Margulies (a potential love interest). Ignore these people. She (Margulies) is far more realistic in this movie than The Man from Elysian Fields. Her Irish accent is spot-on. Brosnan was competent and likeable.

The PQ of the dvd is a toss-up. Shot in low light, sometimes in a pub, it may appear faded or muted on some screens. This may be an issue of dvd vs hd, because the limitations of dvd surely do not convey the atmosphere intended by the cinematographer. An analogous situation might be the comparison between the dvd and hd versions of Gosford Park. Let's hope that Evelyn is at least broadcast in HD.
