EVX-180A vs JBL 2245H

4334 Views 4 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  Kwikas
Has anyone had experience in using either of these 18" drivers for sub duty and can they provide any insights into how they performed? I'm interested in a comparison between the two if some one can provide one.

I was set to pull the trigger on some JBL 2242's (4645C enclosures) but have the opportunity to pick up either of the other two at a much lower price.

Any advice much appreciated.

Hi Kwik,

I have had 2-EVX 180A 18s for about 10 years, IIRC.

They are each in approx. 10 cubic feet in a double chamber reflex alignment.

At one time, I had them tuned low for HT and they workd quite well. Very efficient and made them easy to drive.

I have since retuned them to their intended bandwidth and use them for the bottom end of my bass guitar rig.

I tend to find the limits of my gear and never flirt with disaster after that, so I'm happy to say that they are in near perfect condition after a decade of excellent performance.

Never used the JBLs, so I can't comment, but 2 thumbs up for the EVX-180A. They are superb drivers, IMHO.

Thanks Bosso.

I wonder whether the EVX 180A's I'm looking at are basically the same as yours. There are two of them side by side in one cab. There are four round ports in total -two underneath each 18" driver. According to the seller these cabs were used under the EV Mongoose very successfully.....

This particular cab has only been in a cinema install. It's not had any band or PA use.

One thing the seller recommends is to perhaps cut the cab in half and have two separate cabs with one driver in each. It would be simple to do but I'm not sure what the benefits would be......unless he is thinking about the flexibility of sub placement by having two units instead of one. Would two single's offer any sonic improvement over two drivers in the one cabinet?

What size amp is recommended for driving the X180A's by the way?

Appreciate your help....

Hey Kwik, no problem.

I think it would depend on the size of the box. As I said, each of mine are in 10 cubes, which is BIG, IMO. If I had them both in a single 20 cubes box, it would indeed be much harder to place than the seperate boxes.

Can you measure the length of the ports as well as the diameter of the ports and the overall dimensions of the box? If so, we should be able to guess the tune and it would be much easier to recommend the appropriate power plant.

Bosso,

I've been waiting for some people to get back to me about this cab.....now I've finally managed to get some history around it.

It turns out that the whole box was properly designed from the ground up by the EV agent in Australia (APAC Audio). This was a few years back. They needed to come up with a suitable bass cab to sit beneath the EV Mongoose and so the EVX 218A was born.

While APAC did the design work, they didn't actually build it. They got them professionally made by another company - a cabinet maker I believe, and it proved to be very robust and very successful.

The EVX 218A consists of two EVX 180A's side by side in a cabinet that measures 1,150mm wide x 780mm tall x 650mm deep...weighing in at 85 kg's! There are four ports as I mentioned earlier.

This particular unit I'm looking at found its way into a cinema and was never used in a gig. The cinema has closed so it's up for sale....

The guys at APAC said the EVX 180A driver is rated at 600W @ 8 ohms and an EV P2000 amp would be good to use on this...but a P3000 would be even better.

One person I spoke to at APAC used to work at the company that built the EVX 218A. He reckons a P3000 is the 'minimum' you would want. His recommendation; "between 1,200W and 1,500W per driver is about right".

They stopped building them a while back but APAC believe the cab design is absolutely spot on. It seems that EV's very own TL880D is a match up in design so it must have been done right by the APAC team from the beginning. The only real difference is that the TL880D runs the later EVX 180B drivers....no big deal.

The EVX 218A is ugly....but it will sit behind the screen :)

I haven't settled on the sub amp(s) yet and I'm in no hurry as the cinema is still in the planing stages. I'm interested to hear your thoughts though......
