I want to buy the new Yamaha RX-A3010, and I don't mind waiting a few months if there is a good chance it will go on sale on or around Black Friday. Does a new model like this sometimes go on sale around Thanksgiving, or does the price typically stay about the same until a year from now when 2012 models are announced? For example, was there a RX-A3000 price drop late last year? If typically new models don't get a price reduction around Thanksgiving, then I won't wait. Thanks for letting me know.

Yamaha has 2 series currently the x71 series which are announced around CES in January and start shipping aboutApril. The Aventage line starts shipping in ~September and were announced this year on June 30, 2011. Once the new ones are announced is when you will start to see bigger discounts on the current models.
Different companies have different announcement/ release times and usually depends to which distribution channel they are mainly targeting. Installer and specialty dealers big trade show is CEDIA in September and you will typically see products come out near or announced there. Big box retailer products typically come out near or are announced at CES in January.
Although, I do see this changing as less and less manufacturers and dealers are attending CEDIA in favor of smaller local shows.

And some places are already offering discounts on the 3010 even though they aren't out yet. As is nearly always the case you will see the MSRP on internet sites, you have to call and talk to a sales person to get the best price. This is whether they are new or models from years past. If they have them in stock(older) models they will be discounted if you call. On something like the X10 and X0010 Yamaha's they can and will be discounted even if you may have to pre-order. Just don't expect to get the best price by ordering over the websites.
Generally speaking, all electronics prices drop over time. The amount of drop depends on how much inventory needs to be cleared over what time frame.

In general it is worth a phone call. I wouldn't rule out local dealers either for a decent discount. They are often forgotten in the age of the internet. I didn't say there wouldn't be discounts with the newer models but the out going models often get a reduced dealer cost, especially volume dealers to clear out the current inventory. Also, the internet price policy doesn't apply to the discontinued models so you will find them online without having to call. Some of the current deals on the recently discontinued models are selling below what dealer cost was a month ago. If you don't need the features of the new models you will get a greater savings on the discontinued model that won't happen with the newer model until next year
Yamaha is the hardest to get a discount on(not counting Integra, as Integra hardly ever needs to discount) because they have an "authorized pricing" scheme, that if not followed, means the re-seller/tailer gets cut off from future stock purchases.

You have to be sure that it is indeed the AVR you want when you purchase from Newegg. Their return policy is for defective only. Crutchfield has an excellent return policy but discounts are almost non-existent, especially for new items. J&R also has an excellent return policy and will deal with you in most cases. If you have to call for any discounts unless one of them has a coupon code. In most cases if not all it is still better to call and talk to a salesperson.

Newegg is running a special promotion that includes a $500 gift card on the 3010. This offer only good through today the 18th but they will probably run it again in the future.
Only good if you want to buy another $500 of Newegg products.
Onecall has a feature on the 3010 page that let's you email them your best offer. They then come back with a counter offer. Your mileage may vary but the offer they emailed me had a decent discount.

Not to mention the exact numbers, but I've finally gotten around to putting my new 3010 in the system and rewiring everything. It had been sitting in my floor for 3 weeks until I felt like pulling the entire system apart.

Considering the prices you see it at, I managed to get a full 450 below MSRP at a local 'big box' store.

It's certainly a deal at that price although when comparing it to older 'legacy' Yamaha products I certainly see where they've been cost cutting.
This is my fourth yammy through the years that has served as a surround processor, starting back with the 3090, A1 and V1. Still have a DSP-A1 in the game room that compared to the 3010 is a BEAST. For that matter the 3010 is anemic when compared to it and especially the V1! Funny thing though is I had never, not once used the amp section in the A1 or (or V1 actually) until I stuck it in the game room. (Always used Adcom amps, then later on moved to Sunfire Cinema Grands... Which I'm still using with the 3010!)
As for 'deals', don't expect to pay anywhere near advertised prices, just not necessary. Should be easy enough to get 20%+ off if you're willing to 1:negotiate, and 2: flash some cash.

Found that most salespeople don't like tire kickers too much. (Plastic however is certainly the preferred purchasing method if for no other reason than to protect you after the sale.)
