Which DirecTV HD receiver should you buy when you have a Faroujda processor? I have a Marantz VP-12S1 DLP that is native 720P so this would imply the Panny but, is it better to purchase one of the other units and let the Faroujda do the scaling?

Welcome to the forum.

Not exactly sure what you're asking, as you didn't mention what model of Faroudja you have. Are you asking if the Faroudja will scale high definition? If you have an NRS, as I do, it only handles 480i. I understand there might be a high-end Faroudja which scales high definition, but have no experience with it.

Personally, I don't see how making a satellite receiver decision has anything to do with your Faroudja. You should be evaluating picture quality, reliability, user interface, and the experiences with others on this forum with the various makes and models. Take a look around and use the search function to narrow things down.

Good luck in making your choice.

My question is, because the Faroujda is so good at scaling and deinterlacing (probably better than the HDTV receivers), is there the equivalent of some native resolution to the receivers where they do the minimal processing and I handle the rest with the Faroujda? Or, since my DLP is native 720P am I better of using the Panny because it has a 720P mode (that is cleaner than my Faroujda doing the work)?

I hope this is a better explanation.

Yes, if you are using a processor that scales HDTV, then it should be fed the native HDTV signal. In other words don't let the STB scale it to another format. But remember you have no control over what format the signal is broadcast in. If it's HBO for example it's 1080i. I believe the Panasonic STB's can output what ever they get.

As questioned above however - what eare you trying to do? Feeding HDTV downconverted 480i signals into a scaler to de-interlace them is NOT HDTV anymore. That's upconversion. If your display is 720p and your STB is outputting 720p, you don't need a scaler. If the signal is origionated as 1080i, then you have a choice as to the display or the STB doing the scaling. This is a choice that can be changed anytime. If you have a scaler that accepts HDTV input, that could be used too. I see some Faroudja scalers do take in 1080i and can output 1080p or other formats.

Perhaps a practical example will help.

I have a Pioneer 50" plasma with a Sony SAT HD-100 high def satellite receiver. I connect the 1080i signal directly into the Pioneer through its component inputs. The picture is simply amazing. I'm assuming you would get the same result with your Marantz regardless of which satellite receiver you choose.

For standard def 480i from the satellite receiver, I go to the NRS via S-Video and the NRS deinterlaces and scales at the plasma’s native rate of 1280 x 768.

Hopefully this is getting clearer for you...the only Faroudja that "scales" HD is the DVP5000 (it actually de-interlaces 1080i/60 to 1080p/60...even it passes 720p through as is). All of the other Faroudja's that can handle an HDTV signal (and that's most of them!) simply pass through the signal, offering the option to transcode it if needed (e.g., taking YPrPb 1080i or 720p and outputting RGBHV 1080i or 720p). The only consumer grade scaler that *truly* scales HDTV (as in cross converting 1080i to 720p, etc.) is the Teranex.

I have a Zenith DTV1080 and a Faroudja DVP2200 feeding my FPTV. I send the Zenith through the pass-through of the Faroudja to the FPTV. The Faroudja doesn't process it at all. I can choose 1080i or 720p on the Zenith, and both will be passed through (although it involves flipping a switch on the back, unlike the Panny.)

Actually, truth be known, the switching was so annoying on the Faroudja, I now bypass it entirely with an Extron VGA switcher, but that's another story.

The Faroudja is passive in this entire scheme. It does nothing to the signal. I use the Zenith's upconverter to upconvert cable and non-HDTV DSS signals to either 1080i or 720p depending on my mood. Both are excellent. The Faroudja I use to upconvert DVD or VCR to 600p (the max on my unit).

I hope this helps explain what is commonly done with this combo. If it's as clear as fog, ask away.

The Vigatec can also do it.
