1080 is the resolution, there is 1080i and 1080p, alos lower res like 720p
i=interlaced and p= progressive
1080p is much nicer that that 1080i, but you probaly will not see that unless you are going to have a blue-ray player. (if you aree going to uses blue-ray get 1080p, still better to have it for future proof reasons)
DLP/LCD/and PLASMA are display technologies, and each have a up and down side.
DLP = Bigger for cheaper, They have a nice picture if the room does not have lots of light. especialy sunlight. These are no flat panel like LCD or PLASMA, they are deaper, so you can not hang on wall etc..
LCD = Bright, better for bright rooms and if you like video games. These are thin and can hang on a wall. The black levels are not as good as DLP and PLASMA.
PLASMA = Not as good in bright rooms as LCD, not as good with video games, can burn in the screen. but much better colors.
In a good dark room these should give you the best picture of the 3 for movies.
I typed this fast, sorry for typos, there are plenty of sites with this info.
