Here's my comment on an external drive failure with my 8300.

The symptom was that the recorded list would flash momentarily but not stay. Did a power cycle and the 8300 (Sara firmware) would show a screen saying the DVR had to be restarted, but reset to a blank screen, reboot, and loop. It booted normally if the external drive was disconnected.

I replaced with a 1 TB Western Digital (Green) in the old enclosure. The 8300 rebooted and asked to format the drive. Clicked OK and it immediately rebooted again which scared me briefly, but then it came up. Lost all the program material on the old drive, of course.

The original external drive, also a WD, barely lasted two years.

I have had trouble when the eSATA cable connector momentarily came loose.

I wish it had been an unseated cable. Today, I tried the old drive again, and the 8300 repeated the same symptoms, except it did finally reboot instead of looping. After booting, it did not show any increase in disk capacity, so it was not reading the drive.

The drive still works though. Initially, I couldn't read it with Vista. XP, or Linux. I just repartitioned it with NFTS and a Linux (etc2) partitions, and it now passes diagnostics and is readable on either Windows or Linux. Go figure. Maybe it got glitched somehow in a critical spot or the kids bumped it while messing around with their WII console.
