Extended warranty or not?

697 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  JohnA1
Hi,

Ok, I've narrowed my choices down to either the Sharp LC-52D62U or the Samsung LN-S5296D, both of which have their share of problems. Ordinarily, I don't believe in purchasing an extended warranty, but based on the track records of these TVs, I'm beginning to rethink the idea. So, should I, or shouldn't I get the extended warranty?

Oh, and any opinions on which TV I should get?

Between the two, I'd get the Samsung.

I'd also:

a) buy locally. Go to a brick and mortar store. You want to be dealing with people face to face just in case you do have issues with the TV.

b) buy the extended warranty. It puts in a whole different arena should you run into trouble. Instead of dealing with, say, Samsung, you're then dealing with Best Buy or Circuit City.

Just a bit of background. I don't normally buy extended warranties either. I don't think I should have to, but that's just me. I just bought a Sony KDL-40XBR2 and this line of TVs is having it's share of problems, too. These TVs are suffering from a mura defect commonly referred to as clouding. The Sammys are having that same trouble and the Sharps are having banding issues. Anyhow, I opted to buy locally and picked up the three year service plan. Get the shortest, cheapest plan out there. You can always extend it, if needed. Anyhow, Sony has been dismissing customer complaints regarding the mura and telling folks that the condition is "normal". They are NOT repairing these defective TVs. Now, if all I had was the mfg. warranty, I'd be in a bad place. However, I've got a CC warranty and that will cover the repair and/or replacement. Luckily, the TV I have does NOT have the mura defect, but should it develop, I'm covered.

Hope this helps and happy viewing!

Oh yeah, Welcome to AVS!
Depends on the price of the warranty, plus keep in mind the problems that are happening (banding) seem to happen out of the box not down the road. Consumer reports say that exetended warranties are a waste of money...Of course they also said they were unsure about flat screens b/c the data collected has only been over a few short years. So they are unsure. It is all about peace of mind.. and cost I looked into the same tv in Canada and they wanted almost 800.00. Plus they only covered certain things... not everything such as one or two pixels going no, but a row of them going then yes you were covered. Does this help?
hmm, how long is the Samsung warranty, one year? I guess that will cover out of the box defects, though I am still concerned about future problems.
Depending on your credit card, you may get an additional warranty with your purchase. I have a KDL-46V2500 on order, and when it comes I'll be paying with my visa card. This will double my warranty from 1 year to 2 years. Check with your credit card company for details. I know that mine only applies to new (i.e., not open box) purchases.
