Extended Warranty Question

696 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  c1courtney
Forgive my ignorance here - but am I able to purchase a tv from a local deal and then buy an extended warranty elsewhere after the fact.

For instance, could I buy a Sony LCD from a dealer and then afterwards purchase an extended service plan from sonystyle.com -- I see the options but not a place to actually purchase it unless you also buy the tv online - any help would be appreciated.

Not sure on Sony televisions, but here is what I found out about Mitsubishi:

Mitsubishi's come with a 1 year factory warranty.

Up until the warranty expires, you can purchase a 3 year extended warranty from them. Before that 3 year warranty expires, you could renew that warranty, and none of the years overlap. You can have up to 7 years warranty on the unit.

I checked with Fry's Electronics, where I intend to purchase mine, and the largest they offer is a 5 year warranty.

Needless to say, I will prchasing my extended warranty from a different place from where I bought the unit.

I had the same idea...i was going to decline the store's extended warranty and purchase an x- warranty directly from Panasonic for a PT-50DL54 (which i haven't yet purchased). So i called Panasonic to price the x-warranty and they quoted me - hold on to your hat - $549 for 1-yr extended warranty and $849 for 2-yr extended warranty...i couldn't believe it.
Have you considered a RepairMaster warranty? They sell warranties for all types of products. Prices are excellent (especially for 5 years). I bought two warranties from them and found their service to be good. A lot of places sell them and it doesn't matter if you buy the TV somewhere else. Tvauthority.com sells them. I bought mine at Efunctional.com (cheaper).

A couple things to keep in mind...

The RepairMaster warranty begins at the expiration of the factory warranty. Example ....4yr warranty gives you 5yr total coverage (+Sony one year warranty). Check the fine print. Some extended warranties begin from the date of the TV purchase.

You need to register the RM warranty within about a week or 10 days after you buy it.

They package a lot of different warranties, but these are two that may apply to your purchase.

RMT45000 - for televisions priced $2,500-$5,000. 4 years coverage following the manufacturers warranty exp.

RMT25000 - same as above except only 2 years.

you can check out terms and conditions here:

does the repairmaster warranty cover bulbs?
I've got the RMT45000 on my HLP5674W - $275. No bulb coverage.

The way I see it is most places want $500 for a warranty that covers the bulb. And with appear to be bulb life expectancy of todays sets I'll hit a single bulb in that period. The bulb is $200 today (probably cheaper as time goes on) and is easy to change.

You do not need to buy the tv from sonystyle.com to buy the extended warranty. The coverage begins when you purchase the warranty. If you buy it after the manufacturer's warranty (1 year) has expired, there is a 30 day wait period to make a claim. Lamps are not covered.
I contacted SonyStyle and the EW may be purchased online whether or not you purchase the TV from them. I'm purchasing a Sony TV tomorrow or Monday from a local dealer and plan to get the EW from SonyStyle. Save bucks that way.
FYI jagfan your only going to be covered for manufacturers defects by buying a sonystyle warranty
Make sure you check if its in home, bulb coverage, if it covers anything about manufacturers warranty. One of the best i've seen on microdisplays is BB, which is 400 for 4 years, covers in home, bulb, even preventative maintenance (cleanings), heat and humidity damage, normal wear and tear, surge, dust and dirt, etc.
The Sony extended service plan is provided by Service Net Solutions. It covers parts (including bulbs) and labor with in home service. Terms and conditions can be found on Sony web site.
When buying a RepairMaster warranty, is it the price you paid or the MSRP that is used to determine the price of the warranty?
DLP-Dave,

I believe the RepairMaster Warranty is based on the MSRP of the units (i.e. the RMT45000) is a 4 year extend (4yrs after manufacture warranty expires) and is for items w/ an MSRP of $2500 to $5000.

They're not going to give you a break on a unit that you somehow got for peanuts.
