External DVD drive

I have a HTPC built with an external DVD drive. Only the DVD drive is visible. The computer is mounted to the back of a wall. It is a USB drive hooked to a 2.o port

I think I may need to reformat (went from one nforce2 board to another without a reformat, just had to reinstall ethernet and audio drivers), but I get some studdering. Specifically, every Star Wars movie during the opening exposition. Other times it skips several frames... audio continues, and after the frames are skipped, audio and video are still in sync.

I guess I am looking for someone else who has an external drive and is using it in the way I am. If there are others that are doing the same successfully, I will reformat. If y'all tell me its a consequence of having a drive on USB, then I am going to go cry. Like I said, it doesnt skip all the time... in fact, there is no predictability except the Star Wars openings.

Try temporarily copying the movie to the local HD. If it still skips, then it is not the externa DVD drive. I doubt that it is the external drive.

I dont think it is either. I was reading up on DVDs and DVD drives after I posted. The NEEDED bandwidth for playing a DVD is well within the capabilities of USB 2.0 or Firewire... unless I am missing something. A USB 2.0 connection can theoretically support a 40X DVD player and still have room to spare... now this is theoretical, but supposedly you only need a 1X player to do a DVD video.

I dont know if I have the ability to copy the DVD to my harddrive. I have plenty of space, just dont know how to do it.

Do a Google search for DVD Shrink or DVD Decryptor. Those are two programs I used to rip a DVD to hard drive. I find DVD Shrink a bit easier to use. Just make sure you use no compression when copying to hard drive.
