I recently ran into a problem when my external USB 2.0 case for my backup harddisk did not recognise disks >128GB. This has nothing to do with the windows update/patch that you may need as it works fine when connected through the IDE port but is rather a chipset problem of the external drive enclosure.

I wonder how you can recognise if an external drive enclosure supports drives beyond 128GB? Is there a particular chipset which is necessary? Most USB enclosures seem to use Genesys Logic 811 but I don't know if this chipset actually supports the larger drives.
