So I've had a pair of Lilmike f20s for 3 years now, always enjoyed them. I bought them from Huskeromaha back in the day after our 2011 Subwoofer GTG in Omaha. They were mfw-15 loaded and I have always exclusively run with a Crown XLS-1500 amp.

The performance in my very large room has always been admirable, but I found myself wondering if there was more to be had from the same cabinet using different drivers. I researched the different drivers that would work better in this cabinet, I came to the conclusion that the Dayton Ultimax 15 or the Exodus Tempest x-2 would work best for this application. I also figured the extra X-max on the tempest would probably make it the most optimal driver for this cabinet. I posted a thread on this forum WTB 2x tempest 15 x2 and several months later had an offer of a pair at a reasonable price. Beastaudio sold me his pair, one of which had a slight voicecoil rub. I got them in the mail last monday. I pretty much spent all of Monday evening getting the old drivers out, modifying the opening so the tempest would fit, and repairing the other tempest. (the spider had come unglued from the former) I found that the other driver was probably close to doing the same thing so I fixed that one too. (epoxy)

So I got the Drivers installed

Weeded out a few air leaks, and was ready to go.

I quickly discovered that my Crown was no longer going to cut it, ran out of gas far before the subs did. I did some research and ended up trading a powered mixer plus my crown for a QSC PLX-3402 which matches up nicely with the drivers thermal limits.

From what I can tell this driver receiving it's proper power is about twice as loud as the MFW-15 in the same cabinet.

So about a week later I start noticing an odd phenomenon. My cats all seem to like to be inside the horn when the bass is hitting. I find this quite the opposite what you would expect a cat to do.

Fast forward to this week. I am running a 20hz sine wave trying to determine SPL at the LP. Everything is going fine until I hit 118db and I heard a noise start in the right side horn. I get up close to it and it sounds like a voicecoil let loose. I pulled off the side panel and hear no bad noises from the driver.

I pulled the driver and figured there was an airleak so I resealed it again and reinstalled. Played the test tone again, same noise. Sounded like a severe air leak somewhere. I stared to think maybe its the dust cap so I pulled the driver again. No issues anywhere to be seen so I reinstall and reseal it. I went back and forth with this a couple times and found a small airleak inside the chamber. I went and bought a tube of PL Premium and resealed the chamber. Hooked everything up again, same noise. Just as I'm getting ready to give up and accept that the cabinet let loose a seal internally I tilted it to pull it off my work bench and heard something slide inside. I laid it down and tipped it upside down, something definitely was jangling aroung inside the horn path somewhere. I assumed it was some dried PL that broke loose causing the air leak. So I spent a few minutes turning the sub upside down and over again to work the debris to the mouth of the horn. On the last turn I looked in the base of the horn and found this:

Frickin Cheez Its in my horn. I don't know if my kids put it in there or the cats dragged it in there, but somehow the whole bag got sucked up inside the horn. I'm glad in the end there was no air leak or blown drivers but it consumed about 5 hrs of my time regardless.

Anyway. graphs to follow.

Crazy man. I'm amazed a cat would walk inside that thing at any volume level.

you and me both!
