for some reason i can't buy useful potions and supplies anymore. all of the traders have one or two things. is there a reason why this is happening? i try sleeping and get nothing

Sometimes you have to wait a few days (in-game days) for the vendors to re-supply their stock. Best thing to do is to travel to other towns and buy stuff at other places. Similarly there are travelling vendors in the different zones as well.

Stocks did seem to dwindle a bit towards the end of the game but I could get what I wanted eventually. Is this after you finished the main quest? Also, they just released a patch that explicitly fixes the Furniture Store issue so it might fix this for you too.
