I'm getting ready to buy my first home theater system and have the opportunity to buy an Onkyo HT 780 new, or an Onkyo HT870 manufacture reconditioned for almost the exact same price.

The refurbished one isn't guaranteed to include cables or manuals, and I believe only carries a 90 day parts and labor warranty.

I'm sure I would be very happy with the 780, but the 870 appears to be a better system.

Buying the 870 is not an option at this time.

I looked at the 870 closely before picking up the 770 back in Jan. I couldn't hear or see a $300 difference in retail value. The receiver is essentially the same unit with a THX tweak of some kind, the speakers have the same specs, may or may not have been improved, the sub is an upgrade.

The 780 has re-worked speakers, a 7.1 receiver and a larger sub.

For the price I'd go with the new system w/full warranty. However, both are upgradeable. I feel Onkyo makes the best Htibs and offers real HT value. The receivers are top notch entry level. The speakers/subs as with all Htibs you may want to replace down the road.
