Fade to dark gray

655 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  smokenz
I was at the BB today shopping for some ram, and it was interesting to watch all the HDTVs and when there was a fade transition between segments, most of them would fade to dark gray, while the Kuros faded to almost black. There was actually a Samsung LCD which could also fade to almost black since its dynamic contrast ratio was 500,000:1, but I don't know what the real ANSI would be. I guess I've been spoiled just by the reports, images, and videos of the Pioneer Extreme Contrast Concept as well as good old 1,000,000:1 Contrast Ratio CRTs.

From Thomas J. Norton's (Home Theater Magazine) review of the Samsung LN-T5281F, the ANSI contrast ratio was measured as 2,340:1.
That's pretty good, but still slightly below Kuro levels, it's still a lot better than any of the other current flat panels except the Kuros though. The Pio 6010 has an ANSI contrast ratio of 3,542:1 I think.
even if lcd catches up in blacks the motion and "3D" look to me just isn't there, however plasma will ultimately die because lcd's excel in bright showrooms

If OLED matches expectations it will supplant both LCD and Plasma.

I think you're right, everyone I know who has purchased a new tv in the past couple years have either gotten lcd or dlp. I don't know if it's due to FUD on the internet, salespeople trying to steer customers to more expensive lcd's, or just the fact that lcd's stand out on a showroom floor and dlp's seem more like the tried and true rear-projections that everyone is comfortable with. Maybe a combination of all of that.

What really gets me is that I have friends who come over and are blown away by the PQ of my plasmas...I explain why I chose plasma as well as dispell myths...and they STILL end up with an lcd or dlp. I don't get it..

oh well, i'm sleeping well at night knowing i'm getting the best PQ for the dollar and whenever i view their sets i can't help but to bash it's performance because i'm not used to it
look on the bright side, you can go around to their homes and point out the flaws such as black levels, motion lag, side viewing, colour accuracy...

that's what i've been doing to my friend with an XBR4 haha
