This thread will be used for publishing failed Denon units in the field. (Only)

Please post your data in this format:

1) Serial Number of defective unit

2) Problem identified

3) How was it resolved

2) My first 3310CI from about a week ago would not output any sound. Using Audyssey produced no test tones and the test would fail after it tried the first speaker and it would tell me my speakers were not connected. When I'd play a movie all the correct True HD lights would light up, so the receiver was getting the signal and recognizing it, but none of the speaker terminals were outputting sound. When I got the replacement 3310 everything fired right up and worked perfectly.

1 - Just came across this thread so I do not have the serial numbers, already returned all three 3310's.

2- 1st and 2nd 3310 would not output any sound, not even a test tone. However, I would hear a very very quiet thump in my speakers when I changed sources. The blue light came on for blu-ray so they recognized the input signals. 3rd 3310 would not show the display on the front of the receiver or output sound but the GUI worked fine. The other Denon's I have (2809 & 3805) make a single click sound when I turn them on and then a second click a moment later that I assume is the amp coming on. The first two 3310's would make these clicks but the 3rd one only made the first click. I updated the firmware on them all to no effect. Reset the processor to no effect.

3 - Shopping around for different brand or maybe try a 4310CI. Noticed the 4310 is made in Japan and the 3310 is made in China. My 2809 and 3805 have zero problems and they are made in Japan. Maybe Denon is having teething problems moving production to China?

I've had two failures. First one produced no sound, DOA, basically. Sent it back, got a brand new one. I did not make a note of the first one's serial number.

The second one worked fine for a month or two. Then (after a hard- but clean- power off, I had to kill the power to the room) networking suddenly stopped working. The device "hung on" to the IP address I had manually assigned to it, no matter what I did (including two different forms of MP reset). It was still pingable, but network functionality did not work.

I am unable to connect to the web remote UI, Internet radio and network streaming just hangs with the "Connecting" message on the LCD panel, and no UI on-screen. The Network settings menu is inaccessible (it just says "Network Connecting", with no ability to drill down into the menu).

Also, and this part is more speculation, but I feel like the unit has also had some HDMI sync issues since the network problems started. Occasionally when switching inputs, the device will not sync up at all. Sometimes, it does not even appear to "try"- no screen flashing, etc. I have to power cycle the AVR to get it to sync.

Even stranger, when handshaking with my Apple TV, the unit now seems to somehow knock it down from 1080P to 720P. Each time I switch to Apple TV, I have to go into settings and put it back on 1080P (which then works fine until I switch inputs again). It did not do this before the issues I started having with networking- so I don't believe this is an issue with the Apple TV itself.

I don't have the serial number for the new unit offhand. Since it's been a couple of months, I now have to get it repaired instead of exchanged. I live a few hours from the nearest repair shop- so I'm going to take it in in a week or two- at which point (if I remember), I'll try and post the serial# here.

At any rate, clearly I am not happy with the quality control on these units. I'm very happy with the device itself (though now I'm suddenly regretting not waiting for an HDMI 1.4 capable device, but that's another issue entirely). Unforuntately, I now feel like I'm always going to be expecting the device to break down. Very unfortunate for such an expensive piece of kit- by far the biggest A/V purchase I've made in years, since my HDTV. I expect a device like this to "just work".

Here was the outcome for this defective Denon. I've attached the work order sheet, with private information omitted, for obvious reasons.

Bought Feb '10. Somewhere along the line the network card has failed. I can't go to network connecting any more. Noticed that because I tried a hard reset because it stopped routing HDMI4 to the monitor unless you power it off and on a second time. It says it is switched to the right input but doesn't actually appear to connect the wires.

I've been pretty happy until now

Sigh.

Problem:

Purchased the Denon Avr- 3310 exactly one year ago. All worked fine set up networking internet radio, updates the full works. Then about three months later went to access the internet radio Nothing! front screen kept saying "Connecting to network" But never did in short anything to do with the networking side no longer worked. Usb updates etc.

rang denon useless kept telling me to download the latest firmware. well as it happened it was the latest firmware but as i kept telling them the fault meant i could not connect to download it anyway!!!

Solution:

Found out on various sites that this was a known problem with a faulty network card, but i was never told this by denon. So i got intouch with the shop where i purchased the amp from, told them i had a problem with the amp and denon told me to send it back(they didn't they were useless) Denon will not except faulty products back from an individual i had to go via the place of purchase for them to try and resolve the problem first then for them to send it to Denon. So this is what i did it took 118 days and many emails before i got my amp back. the good news is it now works fine and yes it was a faulty network card. If you have this problem there is nothing you can do other than to have it repaired.

Details of fault i emailed to place of purchase:

Detailed Description of Fault of Product

Denon AVR-3310 Networking functions and USB connections no longer work. Can no longer access the internet radio or USB devices they fail, stating in the amp window.. "Please wait.. connecting.." I checked all the settings but when i get to the settings option, the page will not open which means i cannot access any settings. This is via the route of...... "Menu/Manual setup/Network setup/Network connecting" There is no option to go any further and open it up to view or change "Network connecting" or "network status settings." Although; everything is set to DHCP so connection settings are set automatically anyway and there should be no need to adjust manually. Usually if i leave it for a while on this page and then try to change source back to the tv or one of the other components. the denon becomes unresponsive and the only way to move on is to physically switch the denon off wait and switch it back on.

Sorry for your experience, however, Denon will indeed except faulty products from individuals ... you simply ship or deliver it to an authorized repair facility. Also, due to the delay when shipping to the main Denon repair facility (up to 6 weeks), a number of owners have opted to simply buy the card on their own ($175; so as to avoid going without the AVR) and install it themselves as documented in the Denon 3310 Owner's thread. It is no more difficult then adding memory to a laptop and takes but a few minutes.
