WOW a thousand posts!!!

I was going to post some volt build pics but I think everyone is probably sick of those. So straight onto Layout.
In typical me fashion the time spent thinking about locations and all that was more than the actual installation but in the end I think its a solid plan and locations.
the 4 atmos speakers are in line with the front l&r's but as a result this pushed them up against the bulkheads

Here you can see the four locations with the ceiling tile pulled out and wires hanging

Here is the side view. I was pretty happy with the centering of the atmos to the seating position and still had separation from the surrounds.
The right side was better separation than the left.

Speaker wire in my theater..... A LOT!!! I got a 1000ft of #14awg below is what is left..... 56ft.
That doesn't include the #12 for my nearfields LOL

I struggled a little with the best way to mount the speakers between the joists.
These Volt 8's have some weight to them.

The strapping is used in plumbing hanging pipe. Very rugged and tough stuff. secured with 3/4" panhead screws

My intent from day one of design of the theater was to have everything hidden
So in keeping with that I made frames and stretched spandex across it.
One layer was to see through so I doubled up for every pleasing results.

The back side of the panel

The front side

And the final results

I couldn't be happier!!!
My daughter came down after and asked why I put the ceiling tiles back over the speakers..... she couldn't tell that it was fabric grills till she stared at it for awhile. She's 8 but it still made feel good about the hidden nature of the speakers. :D

I like my Odroid C2, supports TrueHD audio small form factor and was a reasonable price but no bluetooth, the updates just where not coming for Openpht and I want to dive into some live tv with plex in the future.

So I bought a Sheild..... initial setup was really easy and even had it in an activity (with bluetooth) in a few minutes..... all was good..... I thought
I'm not sure what is going on with this thing but the audio is hit or miss.... sometimes I get 2.0.... other nothing (till i adjust in settings) and others its fine....... very frustrating
Reboots just seam to make it worse.
One time after casting from phone for music I had a video resolution that seamed to be from the phone and was stuck there....until a reboot

Also for some strange reason on a power down my projector wont shut down in the "theater" activity (Epson, Anthem, Shield) yet when I change to "music only" (Anthem, Sheild) is turns off the projector..... weird

Really contemplating a factory reset.... not really impressed so far and I know many rave about this thing.

Anyone have any thoughts?

I have a Shield and the audio sometimes won't give you ATMOS and only 2.0. The trick is to just go to another audio track and then go back to the ATMOS track and that'll fix it. It's a little quirk but the Shield is still the best streaming device out there.

Thanks, I'll try it out

Hey Water. The room looks just awesome - great gear, clean look.

I was looking back through your thread because I remember you working with REW a while ago. I am starting work with REW now:

  1. Was it worth it all? REW has a lot of stuff going on - was it worth it or stick with aud calibration and be done?
  2. How much time did you have in REW and when did you decide you had it right and decide to quit?
  3. What was your process when you started? 10-300hz and then on from there or just full sweeps?
Trying for a real world feedback - REW, worth it or not? I tend to believe so but wow what a can of worms to open hehe...

Any thoughts, suggestions appreciated.

Hey Ddigler,
Thanks for the the compliment, Its a labour of love LOL

Let me caveat with.... I am not an audiophile but I like what I hear.
1) Yes I do think it was worth it particularly with the base and "smoothing" out some spots. I could hear a difference when the front and rear subs where playing nice together.
The quest for ultra flat in my opinion is not worth the time to me...... I don't think I can hear those changes

2) TIME IS RELATIVE LOL.... in the beginning several hours, some/many being learning. Thats part of the fun isn't it LOL.
Since the Anthem has been installed I did a quick REW on base to see that the subs where still ok but thats it.... but the anthem is just so sweeeeet sounding that I didn't dive deeper. A couple tweaks on surrounds and atmos. Maybe one day but its not high on the list right now.
A person can get sucked into the vortex of "perfection" but in the end I think the main question is .... Do YOU like what you hear?

3) In the beginning some full sweeps to see but mostly in the 10-300 range for mains to sub x/o and front/back sub interaction.

I hear ya on the real world feedback..... I am very happy with where it sits now.... could it be better.... probably to someone else's ears

Hope that helps.... I got a little rambley LOL

Enjoyed watching anything lately?

If you haven't tried Spiderman - Into the Spiderverse I highly recommend it! It's excellent audio in both older DTS and Atmos!
Hey man, sorry I haven't been in the forums in a while.... been very busy watching movies and TV shows in the theater.
I have the system on pretty much everyday. Sometimes just for music when working out.

I did watch into the Spiderverse and really enjoyed! Recently finished a marathon of Men in Black including the new one..... always fun revisiting that series.
Also a mega marathon of all the Bond Movies.... 24.... that took while LOL.
For TV shows I thought Carnival Row was well done and recommend it.
