Fan spinning too fast and loud

357 Views 7 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  hdtv00
I have my HTPC running over an year with no problems. But, lately the HSF is spinning more than normal with loud noise. I am running Intel P4 3.4GHz on Intel 815PBLL motherboard with stock fan. I have installed Intel's Hardware monitor which shows fan speed and system (CPU) temps. There are times the fan speed reaching 4800 rpm for couple minutes before coming down to 3000rpm.

I checked the Task Manager to see if there is any process consuming lot of CPU, but that's not the case. Even when "System Idle Process" taking 80% of CPU load, the fan peaks to high speeds for few minutes and goes down by itself.

Any ideas what is going on? I ran anti-virus and anti-spyware, found nothing suspicious.

Thanks

Are the CPU temps going up before the fan turns on?

You could always replace your HSF with a better and quieter unit.

Yes, the CPU temps are going up.

I have been adding lot of hardware (PVR150, FireWire, 802.11 Wireless PCI Cards, 7 in 1 card reader and more) over the time and see the booting slow down significantly. I suspect any hardware causing the issue.

Is the cpu heatsink clean? My buddy just fried his PC because he never cleaned the thing.
i would check out the Zalman copper heatsinks/fans

i have one on my video card, and it is extremely quiet.

i'm pretty sure they have similar setups for cooling your cpu.

Srinath,

I had a similar problem this summer here in Phoenix. I gradually added enough components to my htpc to tax out the power supply. Although it's unrelated to your heat sink fan issue, make sure your PSU is rated to handle the extra components.

With the HSF, you could try cleaning it. I'm not sure how to check if the fan bearings are getting worn, but if the fan is replaceable, I would do it.

I had my PSU fan die this summer and it only took 10-15 minutes before it literally blew out.

the other option is to increase your case cooling with a very quiet fan..with all those additional components (particularly large hard drives) can raise the ambient temp inside the case, this might make the cpu fan rev up seconadry to the rise in the case internal temp....get some more cooling going in the case....that might be all you need!
Yep just buy news nice fans now, quiet ones. You can take them to next pc too. Best way to go and they dont cost that much.
