Hey,

I just built a new gaming PC (i7 with NV 275) with a dash of Win7 64.

I have not built a machine in 4 years and I was curious what other users install after the OS?

I am running so far:

Avast AV

Steam

Firefox

Winrar

VLC

As far as gaming goes, Fraps is a nice program to have for monitoring frame-rates during actual gameplay.

RivaTuner is also important to me due to its simple and high level of tweaking of the graphics card (overclocking, fan speed control, in-game temp monitoring, forced triple buffering with D3D Overrider for Direct3D games, etc.).

For music, I am very fond of foobar2000.

Get EVGA Precision. An easy tool to OC and monitor your vid card. It will work with any Nvidia based card. You might have to reg with EVGA tho. Hope link will get you directly to DL page without reg'ing.

http://www.evga.com/precision/

CPU-Z ( http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php ) and HWmonitor ( http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php ) this may not work correctly for all x58 mobo's

System stress test progm OCCT ( http://www.ocbase.com/perestroika_en/index.php?Download )

Revo Uninstaller, one of best must have's ( http://www.revouninstaller.com/ )

Serach & Destroy anti spyware ( http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html ), just rem to check for updates since its not automatic.

Spamfighter for e-mail, little ad's in app and post marks that you used their product in all e-mails sent out, no biggie since its free and works well ( http://www.spamfighter.com/ )

Core Temp ( http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ ) and Real Temp ( http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ ) to monitor all core temps. Currently monitors four cores, not sure when the 6/8 cores come out if it wiil still work. they prob will have fix's/patches by then.

All FREE stuff...
. I like free.

ADD: all the above works with Win7 64 with maybe the exception of Spamfight since I do not use my Win7 or VISTA PC's for e-mail so I've not tested.

ADD2: Furmark vid card stress test ( http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/ ), just be carefull since this really stresses the vid card. Not sure if it will work with Win7 tho. I haven't used it in a while.

That is certainly no shortage of applications there, Tinker.

I second using CPU-Z, Real Temp, HWMonitor and GPU-Z for simple monitoring/diagnostic purposes.

Spybot is definitely good to have for supplementary protection.

I believe the developer of EVGA's Precision Tool also works on RivaTuner. The latter has more options for customization, whereas the former is easier to use. Once learned, RivaTuner can become a very useful tool for owners of NVIDIA cards.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that NVIDIA's own system tools (separate download) are easy to use for things like overclocking, and can come in handy for some of the unconventional aspects. For instance, the System Monitor aspect will allow you to easily see how much of your graphics card's framebuffer is being used at any given time.

I use everything tinker listed and agree that evga percision is a great utility. I have used it and riva but in the end evga's is easier and just as effective for general oc'ing duties.

I make sure all my pc's have Nod32 antivirus (very small footprint)

spyware blaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html prevents spyware for even getting on your pc and seems to work very well.

Ad-aware : http://www.lavasoft.com/ also a good program.

GPU-z : http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/ a good little utility like cpu-z but for your gpu

Personally I prefer ASquared Free anti-malware, along with a good antivirus like mcAfee to handle the standard viri stuff, although I think Avast is the current freeware darling.

I'd also recommend Google's Picasa 3 for handling all your picture printing and editing duties, its great fun with simple tools that can produce great printed output.

Replace Firefox with Chrome. You'll be amazed at how light it feels in comparison to the pile of bloat that Firefox has become.

If you use any extensions for Firefox you will lose those, however. It's all a tradeoff. For me, the minor improvement in speed isn't worth the loss of quite a bit of functionality in extensions I frequently use.

Just use an older version of firefox.....i went back to the 2x series after the 3x series began to take 10-20 seconds just to shut itself down.

What do you guys do to your Firefox? I'm running 3.0.12 and I decided to time it just now, and it takes 5 seconds to shut down completely, and 8 seconds to load to where I can navigate to a page. And that's on a nearly 6 year old Xeon single core 2.4 GHz w/ 1.5 GB of PC2700 DDR ram on XP pro. And I've got 27 plugins loaded. Actually it may be time to cull that down a bit.

IE is or was (IE8 about screen doesn't say it) based on Mosiac which predates Netscape. As for rendering engines Trident also predates Gecko.

Netscape was also based on Mosaic. In fact it was created by one of the co-creators of Mosaic. Netscape (the company) was originally Mosaic Communications, although that's only because the authors of Mosaic founded the company (they didn't own Mosaic).

Jeezus.. 8 seconds to load? That would drive me nutz.

On my 1.4 ghz laptop, I tried Chrome and did not notice a speed improvement over IE7.

Really? I load the app up once or twice a day. I guess if you load & close the app frequently it might be annoying.

It looks like you have a good list of applications for your gaming pc so far, I can only tell you some of the ones I like to put on mine. I don't currently use all the same applications as you though so you may have it covered already.

I put a program called "Spybot Search & Destroy" on mine, very good for spyware and adware, and FREE.

I also like the Google Toolbar for firefox.... just my preference on this one since I use Gmail.

I run winamp for my music and video tools... another good free application.

Pidgin is a good free IM application that I use to consolidate my skype and aim accounts - you can also use it with other popular instant messaging programs but I don't have accounts on them.

And then of course, my file sharing programs like Limewire and Emule...
