I bought a new house last year, and I've been getting the itch to turn the bonus room on the third floor into a dedicated theater. However, I'm not sure if the room layout is set up in such a way that it would work out well. My main concern is that the stairs leading into the room are in the middle of the floor. I'm not sure if it's realistic to still have a handrail and not have a wall that would block the view/sound. I'd want to do front projection and have the screen at the far end of the room, in addition to doing 7.1+ (already have a Pioneer 1323-K, Polk CSiA6 center, RTiA7 mains, and A6 surrounds in the living room to migrate). I've attached some pictures for reference. I've since had insulation put in, but that's it. Any thoughts on a way to make this work? The basement layout isn't any better, so I want to explore this option first.

those two studs at the end of stairwell walls can come out if you beef up the walls, You could make a drink ledge and have bar stools on the side opposite the screen. The biggest challenge is fitting in a screen and you need to get out the blue tape and see what you can fit between the sloped ceiling profile. I think you will be size restricted.

we need some dimensions of the floor space and of the proposed screen wall.

Yes, this. If you can, make an MS Paint or similar drawing with measurements in it. Big has already given some great ideas so it may be possible just depending on how much room you have.

worst case draw a sketch on a napkin write in dimensions and take a picture and post, I never use anything more than a piece of paper and pencil/pen. Old school

I looked at the pictures and counted studs It looks like you can fit a 120 inch diagioal 16:9 screen between the peaks. That would be 112 inches wide including a 3 1/2 inch boarder on the frame, Assumption is the studs are spaced 16OC.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. All the feedback is appreciated.

Devotech, nice room! Where are the stairs? What are the dimensions of the room?

Jeff, the stud spacing is indeed 16". I've attached a quick sketch of the floor layout. Let me know if you need additional details.

worked with the dimensions and here are my conclusions

if you build 4ft tall knee walls the room ends up 14 ft wide instead of 24+.

the standing room width 6 ft or taller is 10 ft wide so you are limited to 7-8 ft wide seating row

the biggest frame-less screen you can mount is 110 diag, 96x54. The distance on the right side of the diagram from window to stairs is 14.9 ft. room for only one row of seating. then you could do the sit at bar as discussed before for the second row, I would move the screen forward for a false wall to elevate the speakers behind the screen, leaving a 12 ft viewing distance.

Do you have another room?

Thanks for looking into this, Jeff.

I have the surround sound in the living room right now, but I don't want to make that into a theater room. It really wouldn't work out well anyway. The only other option would be the basement, but with the pipes, sprinkler system, and heating system spread all over the place, in addition to the shape of the basement, I'm not sure that would work either. You confirmed my suspicions that the bonus room probably wouldn't work for what I want. Guess I won't be getting what I want without some sort off addition to the house and big bucks. Thanks again.
