Few Q's about Samsung DTB-H260F(Sorry)

Ok! I am an idiot. I thought the Sammy could descramble regular cable signals. Like just hooking up my coixal cable to the Sammy and I was good to go. I didn't research much on the ATSC tuner. I know, I know. Either way I picked up the Sammy brand new for $75 which is a steal. So I did a search for what towers are near me and what I can pick up and I came up with a rather bad line up.

http://antennaweb.org/ [ Zip: 69101 ]

A whole 8 channles. Ranging between 5-37 miles away. So anyways I read that I need an antenna because my coixal cable will not work correct me if I am wrong. If it can be used is it possible to pick up any of those channles? If not any recommendations on an indoor antenna? Outdoor is out of the question, I currently live with my parents and I highly doubt they would allow me to place antenna on the roof. Even if it means free cable channles. My dad would be an ass about it. Last question am I just pretty SOL with out and antenna for my little Sammy to pick up anything? By the way we just have basic cable, no cables box. Thanks for any help sorry if this has been asked millions of times. Flame me if am completely dumb and should just leave.
Those are all the questions I have at the moment when I think more I will be sure to post. Thanks again!

::Edit:: Cable provider is Charter if you needed that bit of info.

The Samsung DTB-H260F can pick up digital cable channels that your cable company does not encrypt. This usually means the local broadcast stations (sometimes not all of them), plus a few odds and ends. These channels are available even if you have just a basic analog cable subscription. Plug your cable into the Samsung, do a channel scan and see what you get. You'll probably find that the local stations are on completely different channel numbers than what you'd expect, so look at the unit's channel list ("Ch. List" button on the remote) to see what you have.

You can see the menus and on-screen displays (such as the channel list) only via the HDMI and component-video (red/green/blue) outputs, by the way, not the composite (yellow) or S-video outputs. So make sure you're using the right kind of connection between the Samsung and your TV.

By the way, there's a long ongoing thread about this unit, and it's probably better if you post further questions there:

Since you sound distraught, InfernoSoul, let me say this:

You got your unit for $100 less than I or anyone else I read on this forum did, so there's some cheer to be found in that. Take an indoor antenna like a Silver Sensor and just see what you get OTA in HD. The much better resolution on even a few stations (not to mention sub-channels) should make $75 well-spent all by itself...

Heh, did you check out my channel line up? There are 6 anolog and 2 digital that I can "possibly" pick up OTA. I'm glad I picked up the little Sammy for such a great price however sad that I cannot put it to use. I don't know if paying for an indoor/outdoor antenna justifies the price for those channels limited at that. I live in a such a small town about 25,000 people and the nearest city with actual good cable unlike here is about 200-300 milles in any direction. I wanted a tuner for my LCD(37" Westinghouse LVM-37W3). I read a little about the Sammy and thought well it would be nice to get my basic cable running into it while I am using my computer I can watch TV at the same time. What I didn't realize was that the Sammy is a OTA and QAM tuner that couldn't decrypt my basic cable. That I still need a cable box to do so. I was just so excited when I found the Sammy for such a great deal I bought it immediately. I hooked it up and did scans on Air and Cable(STD, HRC, IRC) to no availbility. Maybe I will pick up an antenna but I don't know. May just end up selling the little guy or keeping him. Not sure yet. Thanks for the quick help guys I apperciate it. If I deciede to hook up an antenna I'll be sure to post my results.

The DTB-H260F will not receive analog stations so you are down to the two digital OTA stations. One of them, KNOP-DT (NBC) channel 22 (2.1) is close enough to receive with a paper clip. The other one, KPNE-DT (PBS) channel 16 (16.1) may need a better antenna.

As Jeff said you only get digital signals on the Sammy.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

But if the OP doesn't need a cable box then all his cable stations should be unencrypted, there for he should get all the staions any TV in there house gets.
