Saw a tiny blurb in EGM listing a "FF7 Remake" for the PS3. Anyone know any more about this?

I've heard about it as well but don't know anything about it. Your title is misleading, there is no reason to ever remake FF8.

Hey! I personally loved FF8.

Back to the OP's question though, I saw something about that as well, but I'd take it with a grain of salt because Square has promised this before and the project disappeared.

Square had stated a couple years back that remakes of FF7-FF9 were in the pipeline for the PS2 complete with updated graphics and sound, but it never materialized.

What did materialize was a Movie sequel to FF7 (Advent Children) and a follow up game to FF7 in the name of "Dirge of Cerebus" or something along those lines. The movie is pretty cool, at least much better than "The Spirits Within" but I haven't really paid much attention to this new game.

I would love to see current gen or next gen remakes of FF7 or even FF8, but I doubt it will happen.

I'd rather see efforts spent on new games. Most say games are about more than just the graphics, yet get excited to see an old game remade with new graphics. I'm not talking about anyone specifically here, just that I'd rather see new titles.

Square officially squashed this months ago when they said they would absolutely not be remaking FF7. They did plan, and have released several visits back to that world, with Advent Children being the first, and several new games for various platforms to come. I got the e-mail on the Dirge of Cerebrus preorder this AM from Gamestop, and there are several other games as well, all of which were covered at this year's Square E3 conference.

As for remaking games, the FF7 universe has a special place in the hearts of millions of gamers, and is pretty unique in that respect. While I too would like to see new titles, I can also understand wanting to see some of the old favorites.

I'd love for a Secret of Mana game.. Some games I'd definitely buy a remake, like Perfect Dark and Goldeneye :)
I think there is a "Sword of Mana" for GBA that is a sequel/prequel to Secret of Mana?

I would love to see a remake of FF7 or 8 because I have both for PS1 and although I love those games, I hold on to them for nostalgic reasons but I never play them because I beat them when they first came out. If there were modern re-makes of those I would definitely play them due to the updated graphics and sound.

Dirge of Cerebrus does not interest me whatsoever probably because they are deviating from the standard Final Fantasy gameplay that I like and Square's attempts at action/adventure titles have failed pretty badly.
I would also love to see FF7 or FF8 redone with voice acting and updated visuals on the new consoles. I would be surprised if this did not happen at some point. These days square seems to be more interested in whoring out the intellectual property of their old FF games by porting them to cell phones and handhelds, and creating offshoots of the FF7 world. To me, they have taken the quantity over quality approach. I guess they have to keep the shareholders happy...
FF7 still holds the slot for best selling rpg ever. That fact alone should cause square to do the remake. That is also why they have been doing so many spinoffs of 7.
Just found this today. Interesting.

Very interesting, however, I believe its just typical rumor mill information. EGM is not the most trusted source of information in my mind.

Thanks for posting that though. As skeptical as I am, I would love to see a next-gen remake of that game...
After the Square 2005 E3 tech demo:

From the old Wikipedia entry for the FFVII Tech demo and possible FFVII remake
Quote:
In another interview with Yoshinori Kitase from Electronic Gaming Monthly[2], he stated that such a remake would require a team of 300 people working for a full five years, and that he would want Tetsuya Nomura to head it.
And just before that in the same article:
Quote:
That said, in a more recent issue of Dengeki PlayStation, Tetsuya Nomura has stated that his next project, following Kingdom Hearts II, would neither be a remake nor another sequel to Final Fantasy VII[1], complementing Square Enix's claims that no remake of Final Fantasy VII is in progress.
The original article is still in Google cache.
