Most of the players have filters that you can apply. To get a list of them with Mplayer type in "mplayer -vf help". I'll post the mplayer ones when I get home.
ffdshow is a Windows-oriented version of ffmpeg. The real project it is based upon is ffmpeg: http://ffmpeg.sourceforge.net/
mplayer, xine, or vlc are better general purpose media players than ffplay that comes with ffmpeg, and they all utilize the ffmpeg project (and others) to provide various codecs. If yuu need transcoding functionality, ffmpeg itself is quite good as well as mencoder.
