I tried FFDShow x64 and had a lot of problems, the 32 bit version is much more stable and friendly. But the latest x64 build is from July 3rd 2009, so it might be more stable now.

Here are some filters that are x64:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli2/files/

down towards the bottom.

And FFDSHow:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/files/

Under clsid, then 64-bit

If you had better luck with the 32bit version how did you get mkv playback on vmc? Or could you? I have Haali and ffdshow installed on my HTPC, but I have no mkv playback. I can't tell if I have the x64 versions or not. I'm assuming not, because no mkv. I really don't care which versions I have so long as they work. I've done some searching on the issue and get conflicting reports on what works and what doesn't. Do you have any advice for the problem?

I dont know what "VMC" is, I just use either VLC or Windows Media Player to watch movies and TV shows. Playback of all MKV files is completely fine. I use the 32-bit stuff now, but back when I tried the 64-bit FFDShow I actually had crashes with FFDShow itself everyone once in a while. And when it crashed, the movie would be unable to play until I closed the player and reopened the file. Sometimes it would crash, sometimes it wouldnt. Wouldnt always crash at the same point either, it was just random. I dont know if it was a specific file type and or codec, I cant remember. But I think when I was trying the x64 FFDShow, I tried using as many x64 codecs as I could. So Haali was the x64 version too.

On Vista x64 save yourself untold frustration and just use 32-bit Media Portal instead of VMC.

I think you just saved me a lot of frustration. I will try it out. There is a great "how to" on this forum too.

Should be no headaches at all. I have x64 vista and had the same issue. All I did was uninstall all codecs. Then installed Haali x64 and ffdshowx64 just like you are trying to do.

And all was fine after that. You might need to add mkv to the registry, I'm sure someone can link you to how to do it.

Apparently right clicking the mkv and choosing "open with" does the same thing as the reg hack.

Completely wrong. I've been running Media Portal for two weeks now on Vista x64 box flawlessly, and nowhere on their site does it say that.

Media Portal works perfectly on Vista 64 bit, it just uses the 32 bit codecs/directshow filters.

Yup, it's kind of slower than Media Center, but it surely works with Vista x64 fine. "An hour" may not be enough to configure it properly unless you are an experienced user of MP.

unless you need HA there is no reason to use MP over media center. Especially VMC and with 7MC there is no contest.

like it was suggested earlier, try uninstalling all the codecs and reinstalling the only the x64 ones.

Yeah, no contest in favor of MP, which is essentially infinitely configurable. I don't get how anyone can stand VMC's horrendously cluttered interface. Plus currently the only way to play mkvs with 24-bit flac is with the madFlac filter, which is 32-bit only.

After my install and every time I launch the program I get a warning because MS has not released hot fixes, and that it is 'use at your own risk.' When the install completed it takes me to a page that lists "things you need to know about media portal.' On that page is a list of supported OS's and unsupported OS's. Vista 64 is on the unsupported list. It states that it does not run on V64. Like I said I got it to run but not very well. I guess I should mention that I am using Vista Ultimate Edition 64 with recent updates.

This is what you need to do dude. But VMC by itself sucks you need to add on media browser once you get it going.

My apologies, I misread XP 64 as Vista 64. I was just about to post it.

i have used both and 7mc with media browser is by far the superior Front end.

I'll give you MP has far more configuration capabilities, but its not like you cant modify MCE interface if you wanted to. And as far as the clunky menus go, you can modify those too.
