Film based vs video based (HD-A30)

In my owners manual it states for film based I should select 1080p/24 but for video based just 1080p as it can mess up the vertical resolution and lower smoothness. So what should I be looking for so I know what to set it to depending on what I am going to watch?

Well it depends on your TV.

Does your TV accept and display 1080p/24 correctly?

If no use normal 1080p and never worry about changing it again.

If yes set to 1080p/24 when watching films, and normal 1080p when watching video based content (music shows, tv on HDDVD etc).
Yes mine does. So when I was watching Planet Earth in 1080p24 then I was wrong? I will have to try it in just the 1080p mode to see if I notice a difference then.
I think Planet Earth is mastered on video-based framerate sources (not 24fps film). Try the manual "Video" picture setting (not "Auto" or "Film") while set to regular 1080p output (try 1080i output, too) to see if that cleans up the image for you.
Just double checked - apparently Planet Earth is based on 1080p/24 video (not film) according to what I've been able to find out on the web.

Still, regular 1080p or 1080i output might look better on your particular display. Try the manual "Film" and "Video" settings, too.
Thanks for finding that out. I will try the manual settings tonight. My tv is 1080p24 capable so just wondering how 1080p or 1080i would be better. I am sure there must be some reason but I don't know myself.
If your set accepts 1080p/24, but then converts back to 60hz for display (like most do), then feeding it 1080p/60 or 1080i may actually look better.

It all depends on the specific video processing capabilities of both the player and the TV, and how they interact with each other.
On that note - I'd like to hear what folks think about the Pioneer 940 Elite's ability to accept a 1080p/24 signal via hdmi and whether I'd be better off using the 1080i or "up to 1080p/24" setting on my A30.
I thought my tv was able to do 1080p24 based off of a post I read here that if you set the HD DVD player to 1080p24 and you see a picture, your set can do it. Maybe they were wrong. My tv is the Samsung 5084. If you know about this set let me know if by having my HD-A30 set to "up to 1080p24" is correct or wrong. I would think by it saying "up to" means if it can it will and if it doesn't you will be at the next best thing.

Someone else said that you really just have to try different settings and see what looks better to your eyes. What I don't get is how 1080i is sometimes the best option on a 1080p set. Then what is the point of 1080p?

I got a A30 yesterday and hooked it up. I set the Film/Video to auto...not sure if thats the best or not. I then set the format output to "Up to 1080p/24"...I got an image on my TV (Vizio 47") but the INFO screen on the TV shows 1080p/60....which is what I expected since I that TV does not do 24p....I think its just reverted the the next best thing...so yeah I think "Up to 1080p/24" will switch to 1080/60 if the TV doesnt support.

Also, I noticed that having the A30 set to "Up to 1080i" actually produced a slightly better picture...that tells me that the processor in my TV is doing abit better than the A30?

Yes, that is true. This is the de-interlacing issue that was first noticed on the A20, and the A30 seems to have inherited it.
Well I confirmed that I DO have 1080p24 showing. The DVD player says it is outputting 24 hz and the tv says H: 27hz V: 24hz so I am very happy.
