• 52 Pick Up ** … Story is good, but the lead characters are cold, and the film wallows too long in the sleazy, voyeuristic world of the bad guys. It also would have been better shorter.

• 8 Heads In A Duffel Bag **½ … Occasionally very funny, but not often enough, and debuting director [Tom] Schulman's timing is limp.

• The Adventures Of Sebastian Cole *** Compassionate… Despite [the] offbeat premise, the film is more true to life than many other teen-angst tales.

• Auntie Mame ***½ … Episodic but highly entertaining, sparked by Russell's tour-de-force performance.

• Badlands **½ … Stark, moody, moderately successful thriller…

• Band Of Angels **½ Flat costume epic. … Poitier is resolute educated slave.

• Band Of The Hand BOMB … Moronic, way overlong junk from the creators of Miami Vice.

• Beethoven's 2nd **½ Painless sequel, on par with its predecessor.

• The Big Town **½ … With that cast (and Lane as a stripper) it's easy to watch … but just as easy to forget.

• Bird **½ … Fails to balance its story with any explanation of Parker's influence in the world of music. Excellent and believable performances help.

• Blood Simple *** … A visual delight, full of show-offy stylistics; just a bit "cold around the heart," to quote an earlier noir classic. McDormand's film debut.

• Bye Bye Birdie *** … Entertaining. … [Paul] Lynde stands out as Ann-Margaret's father.

• The Candidate *** Keen-eyed political satire doesn't stray far from reality. … Oscar-winning screenplay…

• Cheyenne Autumn *** Sprawling, uneven, but entertaining.

• Children Of The Corn *½ Laughable adaptation of Stephen King's short-short story. … Pretty tacky, followed by six sequels.

• The Cincinnati Kid **½ …side episodes of meaningless romance. Robinson, [Karl] Malden and [Joan] Blondell come off best as vivid members of the playing profession.

• Circuitry Man [no review]

• Cookie *** Droll comedy… No fireworks here, but the performances are great fun to watch, especially Wiest as Falk's breathless mistress.

• Countdown ***½ Near-flawless depiction of real-life trials and concerns of American astronauts… intelligent script… An early gem from Altman. […but I was bored, especially during the final interminable scene, in which Caan walks exceedingly slowly on the moon, weighed down by Earth's (!) gravity.]

• Creepshow 2 *½ …combined reputations [of Stephen King and scriptwriter George A. Romero] can't lift this cheap-looking movie out of the muck. As in the much slicker Creepshow, all the stories are juvenile and heavy-handed…

• Dad ** Genuinely affecting tearjerker turns sappy and "cute" at the midpoint… Why couldn't they have quit while they were ahead?

• Deceiver BOMB Pretentious, derivative groaner…

• Destiny Turns on the Radio BOMB Pseudo-hip script, utterly bereft of wit, is directed with no energy. A complete waste of time. […but I enjoyed it, especially its style.]

• Diner *** Problems of growing up are nicely synthesized… Obviously made with care and affection; a real sleeper.

• Dragnet **½ …parody…starts out quite funny, then goes flat; but the punchline is a howl.

• Duck, You Sucker *** Sergio Leone's wry touches and [the] ultra-weird Ennio Morricone score make it a worthwhile diversion.

• The Elite [no review]

• The Emerald Forest *** Fascinating look at a unique civilization, but lack of emotional empathy for the father and contrived storyline weaken overall impact. Still worthwhile.

• Empire Records *½ … A series of noisy vignettes which add up to nothing, despite attractive young cast.

• The Endless Summer II *** … Exotic locales and eye-popping surfing footage will make this a must-see for hotdoggers; others will still enjoy the unspoiled beauty of big-wave beaches from Alaska to Java. …some brief topless beachbunny nudity.

• Exorcist III: The Legion ** … Film begins well but grows more absurd and confusing until it self-destructs. Shows strong evidence of post-production tinkering.

• F/X *** … Fast-moving, entertaining yarn that's a lot of fun, as long as you don't think about it for a moment afterwards. Angela Bassett's film debut.

• Fat Man and Little Boy *** Flawed but still arresting film… One complaint: some decidedly non-1940's slang amid the dialogue.

• Focus **½ Well-acted relic, adapted from Arthur Miller's novel, establishes a concrete feel for its [Brooklyn] neighborhood milieu, even though it was shot in Toronto on a small budget. Otherwise, it's heavy-handed and "small" — a lethal combination.

• Fourth Protocol **½ Pretty good spy thriller adapted by Frederick Forsyth from his best-selling novel. Brosnan does well as a Russian agent.

• The Frisco Kid **½ Offbeat story… Wilder's performance, and some charming vignettes, make up for many other shortcomings.

• Get Carter *** Austere, brutal crime-drama about a cheerless hit man… Caine perfectly embodies his amoral character, and the film's violence still packs a wallop.

• Get Real **½ … Sincere and well acted, but tends to plod at times.

• The Green Berets BOMB Politics aside, this overlong, incredibly clichéd salute to the Special Forces has enough absurd situations and unfunny comedy relief to offend anyone; don't miss now-famous final scene, where the sun sets in the East.

• Guilty By Suspicion ** …earnest, superficial, and numbingly bland … mediocre writing.

• Hard Eight *** Spare but accomplished Nevada mood piece… sporadic and deftly timed spurts of violence.

• Havana **½ No masterpiece, overly reminiscent of Casablanca, and a huge box-office disaster, but still unjustly maligned as a stinker… Very entertaining for about 90 minutes, then tails off.

• Hellraiser **½ Grisly but stylish directorial debut by famed horror novelist [Clive] Barker; ugly fun all the way.

• The Hindenburg ** Intriguing premise… undermined by silly Grand Hotel-type characters and unexciting denouement.

• It's Alive! **½ Schlocky thriller… Has a devoted following, but not for all tastes.

• Juice ** Impressively shot but overly contrived (and extremely violent).

• The Killing Fields ***½ Highly charged drama… Frighteningly realistic depiction of a country torn apart by war and terrorism; an emotional powerhouse. Long but worthwhile.

• The Killing Time ** Stale noir-ish thriller about sex, sin, violence and duplicity in a small California town.

• The Last Dragon ** Juvenile film… Campy and heavy-handed; strictly kid stuff, except for one gag: the name of the Chinatown warehouse.

• Liberty Heights **½ Levinson's fourth Baltimore tale is well-mounted and has many insightful and humorous moments, but is also surprisingly bland, with rather pedestrian plot turns and revelations…

• Lost Souls *½ …This looks great, and is well-acted, but it's just another religious-themed horror film, more pretentious — and boring — than most.

• The Manchurian Candidate ***½ Tingling political paranoia thriller… Harrowing presentation of Richard Condon story.

• Matewan ***½ Compelling and compassionate drama… Every note ring true in this meticulous period piece… Beautifully photographed.

• McCabe & Mrs. Miller ***½ Richly textured mood piece… Altman deglamorizes Hollywood image of [turn-of-the-century Western boom towns] with his realistic visions. Beatty is first-rate.

• Midnight in St. Petersburg [no review]

• Mr. Saturday Night **½ Many moments of truth and insight, but too long, with too many climaxes, and [Billy] Crystal's old-age makeup is garish and unbelievable. It's also tough to make an appealing movie about an unappealing charater.

• Mrs. Soffel ** Interesting but gloomy, emotionally aloof… Well made, but a pall hangs over [the] entire film.

• My Fair Lady ***½ Ultrasmooth filmization of Lerner and Loewe's enchanting musical from Shaw's Pygmalion. Sumptuously filmed.

• My First Mister ***½ A wonderfully fresh comedy-drama… with great performances by the two stars [Leelee Sobieski and Albert Brooks?].

• My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys **½ If you've seen Sam Peckinpah's sublime Junior Bonner, this has got to ring a bit hollow. Capable cast looks good in blue jeans, but cowpie cinema has been better served.

• Natural Born Killers *½ Whatever points Stone wants to make are delivered early on, with a bludgeon; the rest is all sound and fury. 60s-inspired hyperkinetic filmmaking style soon becomes boring and repetitious.

• Night Falls on Manhattan **½ Intense and watchable saga suffers from one major flaw: its central character's naïveté. He's constantly shocked by what we in the audience already know — or have guessed.

• Nostradamus ** Cornball… Best watched when in a silly mood.

• Once Upon A Time In America *** Long, engrossing homage to the gangster film. [This is the 227-minute version, complete except for several minutes of violent footage — notably from a key rape sequence — which exist in European prints.]

• Palmetto **½ Formula film noir… Stylish and steamy, with lots of twists and turns, but follows a much too familiar pattern.

• The Philadelphia Experiment **½ Just entertaining enough to cover production flaws and some gaping story holed.

• Pocket Money **½ Strangely tepid comedy is helped by good Laszlo Kovacs photography [and a] nice bit by [Kelly Jean] Peters. Marvin's car is the damnedest thing you'll ever see.

• Point Blank ***½ Top thriller, ignored in 1967, is now regarded as a top film of the decade.

• The Professional ** Suffers from overly familiar, artificial situations and a bizarre, scenery-chewing performance by Oldman. […but I liked it because of Reno and Portman]

• PT 109 ** Standard (but overlong) action film…; for younger audiences.

• The Razor's Edge **½ It's hard to read much spiritual thought on Murray's deadpan face, but he gives it a good try… Russell comes off best. [remake of the 1946 ***½ film]

• The River Rat **½ Occasionally perceptive… but spins out of control when dealing with a search for hidden money.

• The River **½ Spacek's a perfect farm woman (and mother) but Gibson's character is so coldly stubborn that it's hard to empathize.

• Rough Magic ** Odd little road movie… An uneasy mix of genres, faintly reminiscent of The Big Steal.

• The Russia House ** Alternately tedious and intriguing, but it never catches fire.

• Scanners ** rather plodding treatment of interesting idea, aided somewhat by great (if yucky) special effects.

• See No Evil *** Terrifying chiller.

• Serpent and The Rainbow ** Well done, but wallows in its atmosphere and special effects; however, [Wes] Craven fans will boost the rating by a star.

• Sweepers [no review]

• The Terminator ***½ Terrific action picture never lets up for a minute — a model for others to follow.

• Together ***½ Crowd-pleasing story… Expertly made, the story builds to an emotional crescendo — aided in no small way by its musical score.

• Vibes ** Unsatisfactory romantic adventure comedy… Unfortunate misfire.

• Wildcats *** Never strays from formula but manages to deliver the laughs. Entertaining.

• The Wind and The Lion **½ [Director] Milius brings modern sensibilities to an old-fashioned adventure-romance, with uneven results.

• Year of the Dragon **½ Highly charged, arresting melodrama… but nearly drowns in a sea of excess and self-importance. Still worth watching.

Philadelphia Experiment won't be shown on HD Net. I inquired as to what happened and received the following reply from Katie Gladstone, Dir. of Programming:


The only print available for The Philadelphia Experiment had numerous

picture and audio problems. Because the quality did not meet our

broadcast standards, we were forced to remove this film from the

schedule. At this time, no future airings are planned. Although, all

the program guides were informed of this change, it may have been too

late for the listings to be updated.


Too bad since I really enjoyed that movie and now I'll just have to live with the DVD.
