Well we finally completed (Mostly) our theater/basement project. There are a couple of things left to do, but not much.

Let me know what you all think.

Very nice! Congratulations. You should have years of enjoyment down there.

My only concern is what looks like your front speaker towers sitting on top of a cabinet? I'm wondering if you'll get a "booming" effect due to the cabinet resonating.

What do you have for AV gear? PJ, Sound, Speakers, etc. etc...

The speakers are sitting on an open stage. Underneath is not closed and will soon have the front covered with acousticaly transparent fabric frames. The subwoofer is under there too.

Right now we are using the equipment we used in our family room. We haven't upgraded it yet due to the high cost of finishing the basement. But it sounds pretty darn good for what it is and it uses all HDMI, so the picture quality is amazing.

Nicely done! Congrats!

We really enjoy the theater/gamespace idea as well...
Placing your speakers on an open stage like that may cause issues (resonances, image smearing). You might want to consider adding a solid brace under each speaker to prevent the top of the stage from moving in those specific areas.
The top of the stage was made of two 3/4" layers of plywood and is quite sturdy. I actually wasn't aware that this could be an issue. We really weren't trying to create the utmost perfect sounding room. The one thing we were more concerened about was the shape of the room and avoiding standing waves. So we designed the rear of the theater with angled walls.

Does anyone have any suggestions on fabric frames?

I am still considering putting in chair rail and frames above and below covered in a complimentary fabric to kill some of the echo. It isn't terribly bad now, but I think it might deaden the reflections and sound a little warmer.
Angled back walls as well? I thought that angled walls made for even worse acoustics?

It can be, it isn't just about the "utmost perfect sounding room". It can be a very audible and annoying problem (as annoying as a recessed light rattling). You won't hear it all the time, but when the movie calls for the specific resonant frequency, the resonance will go off, and will be quite noticable. The subwoofer placed in the open cavity may also be a problem of the same sort, causing unwanted resonances. If you play sine waves at various frequencies, you may be able to figure out at what frequencies the resonances will begin and end. For example, in my current non-dedicated room, wall resonances are a particular problem at around 40hz-50hz.

They can be, by focusing sound like a satellite's dish would focus the signal onto the receptor piece. The same problem can exist for torus and other curved screens.
Great looking room!!

If you think it sounds great that's all that matters.

I had some acoustical panels made to a custom size that look and sound great. I'm not much of a DIY'er.

Let me know via PM if you need a hookup.

Awsome ...Job well done...

Love the colors you chose and how the space flows ..

Great Work...

Very nice MK. Great use of the space and it is nice to see natural light in a basement HT.
Great looking basement! Turned out very nice.

Where did you get your seats, they look just like the ones in my garage? (Still in boxes waiting for me to finish my basement.)

Pete
where is your sub? is that it under the front stage? very nice job
Thanks for all the kudos. It was a lot of hard work.

The sub is under the stage. The seqats are Coaster's Showtime collection. They are nice, but not the greatest. If I had to do it over, I would spend a bit more on the seating.

Do you guys think chair rail and acoustic panels would be too much?
I think you are going to Need acoustic panels at the least so no it would not be too much.
Should I put acoustic panels above or below the chair rail or both?
You can run this to figure it out.

That was very helpfull. Are the acoustic panels only to help with the first reflection point? Or should I be concerned with the rest of the room?
