This has cost me quite a fortune!!First got the Buffalo Bluray drive from Japan, which on the box said it comes with PowerDVD BD version! Turns out to be crap!! Needed to bloody wait for the BDA to approve them before they will release the password to turn on the BD version!!!

So I was really really fustrated!! Having the Bluray installed and movie sitting on top of the computer and cant play it!!! Finally, after a full day of internet searching, finally come across WinDVD 8 Platinum (yes its 8 not 7 not 6 but 8), which actually supports both HD-DVD and Bluray!! (Those who are interested in it please drop me a mail, I can help you get it ) So without second thought I've ordered and downloaded it! Installation went well!!

After that the critical moment comes.................... YEAH YEAH YEAH!!! It started playing !!!! YEAHEYAHYEAHYSAHEYASH!! THEN IT GOES "YOUR CURRENT SETTING DOES NOT SUPPORT IT!!! WHAT THE FU... ! To cut it short I owned a ATI 1800XT for one month (in fact I build the whole system about a month ago), not anymore ! After research on the net and going thru all the ATI support HDCP on the GPU level crap, dumped the card and swapped it to 7950GT from Nvidia (IT SUPPROTS FULL HDCP!!)!

So all in all cost me quite a fortune! But I have to say I'm extremely happy with the results ! I'm playing it through a 46"Sony Bravia X-series (1920*1080) and I dont think I'm experiencing the Samsung Problems, picture seems crisp and clear!!!

Finally here's the link for the screenshots!!

Have fun!

I think VLC works with MPEG-2/4, QuicktimeHD and WMV9 files. But it doesn't pass security muster with HD-DVD or BD.

Nice! You got me thinking whether to go your route with a media center PC with recording capability or get a standalone BD player this year. I may end up doing both eventually, but the big question is which one first :D

have you tried hd dvd as well? what are you using as output? hdmi only? (most likely yes but i have to ask--got a projector that only has vga and component) if this solution works i may have to go pc route for blu ray/hd dvd, would rather have stand alone player though. damn this may make me buy a new projector :) :(

I love it how people try rating an hd dvd player from a computer. It quality has zero to do with the BD player or an HDDVD player but what video card you are using and what video player you are using. The actual BD player is just the drive, it doesn't have video built onto it. It would be like if you took the drive out of the samsung player and tried playing a movie on it without the rest of the stuff that is in the samsung.

BTW, you may also want to try the hd-dvd drive from HD-A1 ... if you can get hold of a PC driver for the drive you should be able to play HD DVD movies as well.

FYI:

My setup that works well: Intel Core Duo 3.2, 1 Ghz Memory, Windows MCE, 2* 250G HDD, Winfast 7950 GT, Buffalo Bluray burner and a 46" Sony Bravia X-series (1920*1080). The picture is very very very GOOD!!!!!!! :) :D

That's what I thought! But when I play the Movie "Stealth", it does not allow me to play!!! And it states my current environment doest not supports it!! Until I swapped it to the Nvidia 7950GT, it played smoothly and got great great PQ

Not really. No ICT only means that you can output HD via analog, not that you can output HD on a digital non-protected output. So you can't output HD via DVI on a graphics card without HDCP support but you should be able to output HD via VGA if the graphics card drivers and playback software support COPP (Certified Output Protection Protocol).

This "feature" has been disabled in the latest version of WinDVD. It was a bug that bypassed the copy protection, with a little tweaking it was possible to copy an entire movie frame by frame, so the programmers removed it with the latest version.

None of the BD equipped PCs (the Vaio desktop PC and Notebook) will output an image without HDCP or on the analogue VGA out. So DVI+HDCP or HDMI (on the Notebook) is your only chance.

To the OP: You may want to remove your comment about WinDVD. The software is not availble stand alone right now, it can only be obtained by buying a PC/Notebook with a HD DVD or BD drive (unless this has changed in the last two weeks). You're lucky you found it for sale somewhere, but I wouldn't spread the word since the dealer could be in alot of trouble.

About the "Samsung problems". You're not experiencing any of these problems, because the Samsung has no problems. I can't speak for your PC, but both Vaios are a little sharper than the Samsung, but show exactly the same artifacts from the BDs. That's because the problems are in the source, not in the player. Which is actually a good thing, since it can be fixed once they start to properly encode the titles.
