just noticed the link on the M-Audio site....

The PDF lists a January date for distribution, so no Revolutionary Christmas presents :(

oops! just read the link posting rules... link removed. You can find it in the news section of the M-Audio webpage

[rant]

stupid question time: why can't I post a link like this? it's of interest ot a lot of the forummers and I just want one, I don't sell em like other members here....

I think it is a little heavy handed by the mods aint it?? I mean this is far less 'commercial' in nature than some people's posts with links to their company in the sig file etc...

Thanks for the "heads up" on the pr announcement.

However, I didn't see any mention of the DVD-Audio capability in the release.:(

PDF of a prduct launch at M-Audio would probably not have been deleted by me... I would consider that an announcement not a sales pitch....

A direct link to a for sale site with nothing new to announce is a sales link and I will edit it...

Any product sellers with links to thier site in the Sig please drop me a PM or report the post...

Some SW products have limited permission to use AVS forums as a customer relations ground as developing good HTPC apps is beneficial to the whole community...

Phat

Phreddy,

Since you've brought up the subject here about editing links to "for sale sites" can you clarify a few things for me?

Is this posting prohibition of, "for sale sites" something new? I understand not wanting to turn this site into a swap meet. But what I don't understand is: why the Prohibition now? Is there a specific problem or is this just a preemptive move?

Thanks for your comments.

There has always been the rules that there should be no posts of ANY commercial nature... This is intended to be a friendly meeting ground where HT enthusiasts can get together and discuss / argue / swap war stories / generally educate each other....

Of course with HT being based around hardware then discussing hardware and suppliers of such is par for the course....

I know Alan is very strict on no dealer links at all for the projector side as grey market imports basically make a laughing stock of some US prices and internet cut price low support dealers can effectively use Alans expense (running this place is damn expensive... You should hear the numbers sometimes) to steal his sales and make thier own...

The Audio forums seem more lenient but I do seem to think that it is more discussion than direct links to for sale pages...

Powerbuys and HW sales MUST be cleared up in advance !!! Personal experience has shown me that amature powerbuys done to help a couple of people out can snowball into much bigger than expected and create havoc (anyone remember when about 100 of you were paypal'ing $120 for those webpads and they were not showing up... Thank God I had people pay in batches and that it did get made right in the end)...

We also have a special case in this forum and one that I have argued for some leniancy in... The HTPC would not be nearly as effective and poweful as it is today without AVS and this forum itself... AVS has been the development ground / beta group / bleeding edge of convergence computing since I first started coming here.... As such what happens is smart people see a need for some SW... They put in some work and come up with v1 which covers a few basic needs.... This becomes popular... So the developer spends more time and effort but after putting in 100's possibly 1000's of hours the product goes shareware / donationware / commercial in some nature...

Now it is in no ones interest to then cut this development off so I try and balance minor commercial activity with community benefit... Its a grey area and I am sure sometime I have pissed a developer who thought they were simply giving advice off by warning them not to promote too heavily.... But we do what we can... In general terms any commerical activity is questionable... No one wants to see AVS covered in spam and dealers hawking goods all over the discussion forums... I think that posts pointing to exceptional deals and hot prices (price matching tricks etc) is perfectly OK provided the user is that makes the post is not the seller (this again can be hard to tell but high post members certainly get the benefit of the doubt)... With SW its less clear...

If you have a SW product that you wish to sell you can usually obtain AVS permission to post about your product but please do so by contacting the management first.... Once this is cleared up then using AVS as a place to make a release announcement or discuss feature requests is fine....

Its all about trying to balance the benefit to the community...

Alright, stupid question of the week time :) Doesn't the presence of all required outputs on this card sort of eliminate the need for a receiver? I shelled out a bundle for this Denon 3802, and now this card (which i assume costs only a fraction of it's price) offers that as well? Someone clear this up for me please.

BTW I welcome discussion and opinions on the topic... I am not Judge Dread and I am not the law... I fact I will be 100% candid and say that I disagree with some of the stands I have seen AVS be forced into taking (I will be silent as to what they were) and feel that my role here is to make this as user friendly a place as I can....

You as users can help me in that....

Well you still need power amps but yes essentially many forum members are doing away with thier recievers and doing all thier decoding in SW...

Of course you still have problems with 'other' dd5.1 sopurces being decoded like XBox etc but its is even likely that in a year or two someone will either directly or via directshow work around this and achieve an SPDIF in to decode mode...

That's certainly my eventually plan. I'll be making redundant a Denon 2801 at some point next year :)

Phat' (it's ok to call you Phat?)

So, if I read between the lines correctly; posting a link to, say, an electrical supply store, or such, as part of answering a question is ok, as long as I am not the owner or affiliated with the entity, and it's done in moderation?

I have posted links in the past with this intention, but if this is forbidden, I will cease this practice.

Thanks again (to all involved) for the AVS Forum. One of the more shining examples of what the Internet can be.

Depends on what you want to do with it. I imagine you have other output sources than just your HTPC? This card has no digital input at all. For all your external source like TV, HDTV, Satellite, even an PC-HDTV card you still need an offboard receiver/decoder.

What I do find really cool about this card is that it will keep me from upgrading my Onkyo receiver because (if the software shows up) it will offer features that my current receiver doesn't have, like 192/24 support, CSII and hopefully DVD-A somewhere down the road.

Teeps,

I prefer 'Your Highness' or 'His Exalted Majesty' but yeah Phat or PP will do fine :D !!!

Thats about how I moderate and feel... I want to discourage commercialism on the forum but encourage information exchange (some of which will by definition be commercial) I can often see times when it is possible for a person to advocate thier own solution (if it geniunely fills the need) if it is done in a low key manner especially by contributing members...
