Have a new Firehawk screen and need to ceiling mount it in front of a fireplace. There are two problems: 1. There are no joists where they need to be. 2. One end of the screen would mount through the middle of a vent. How can I span the vent and still hit joists without looking bad?

Thanks

Your dealer is not installing the screen...nor supplying you mounting instructions?

Run two 2x4s horizontally across the wall. Place these two 2-bys at the heights required by the vertical mounts supplied with the screen. You can attach the horizontal piece to the wall and attach to your joists. The screen mounting brackets are then mounted to the horizontal 2bys.

Thanks Dennis:

I could go the 2x3 route but even better, would be two would mounting "plates" that would be wide enough to span the joists. Screw the mounting plate into the joists, screw the sreen brackets into the plate.

The problem is one plate would cover a heating vent (so would the 2x4's).

Any other thoughts? Wire, pipe, etc.?

It sounds like you will need to move the ceiling vent over a little bit. The most difficult part is matching your ceiling, assuming you have some kind of texturing or something. You might have to retexture the whole ceiling, but that is not ridicously expensive.
