Fireplace mount - Wiring recommendations? *Pics to clarify*.

Well, just bought a new home. I can't believe it, but I'm considering mounting my pdp above my fireplace. However, I have two concerns:

1. How do I route the wires through the wall (or at least hide them well) when there's a chimney behind the mount?

2. How can I assure my wife that the wood on our mantle won't get totally mangled in the process? (She wants it to look nice for future owners when we sell the place down the road).

Also, here's my two living room arrangement options. Which do you prefer?

On our current cradenza:

Wall mounted above fireplace:

Please try to ignore my lousy Photoshop job. As you can see, the firplace mount makes the pdp visible from the kitchen as well. Plus, I feel like the way the fireplace is already framed makes the pdp look pretty natural up there.

I agree that it looks very natural above the fireplace, and it doesn't look too high. However, with all that natural lighting, I would check the reflections you get from the fireplace area, if you are planning to have seating at all to the right of the TV.

We love ours over the fireplace - and we have an open kitchen too which we can see the tv from.

1. Typically there is a void behind and above the fireplace to allow for the firebox and the flue. What I did was cut my hole above the fireplace and pulled my cables into the attic and over to my entertainment cabinet. Was actually pretty easy - easier than fishing through a wall. Greenlee makes fish poles that make this easy. They are fiberglass rods for pulling cable and can easily be found at Lowe's or Home Depot in the electrical section.

2. Only cut a hole the size of an electrical outlet. You can even install a "old work" electrical box with a cover plate that has a large round hole in it which is used for round outlets. I used an old work box with an open back just to keep my sheetrock from getting all torn up. If you go to move you'll probably still have the panel mounted while trying to sell - it may actually be a selling point since it'll be pre-wired.

Another tip: While running your cable pull some string or twine through the hole to the attic that is at least twice as long as the run. Pull another piece from the attic down the wall or to wherever you decide to put your equipment. Leave it there and if you ever need to pull more cable in the future, tie the cable to the excess string and pull it through. Just make sure you don't pull your string all the way through at the same time.

Here's my PDP over the fireplace.

Kr8z1 - Thanks for the tips! Your setup looks great and that's the clean look I'm going for. My problem is the master bath is above our living room so I have no attic to work with. However, I do have an unfinished basement under the fireplace. I'm just unsure of the best way to route cables from the basement up to the mount above the fireplace.
You are welcome and thank you.

You could possibly do the same through the basement, it would just be a little trickier. You obviously will have to work around the firebox, but it could be done. If it were me (and I know it's hard for me to assume since I can't see the basement ceiling etc) I'd try to cut a 1" or larger hole up through the ceiling of the basement into the fireplace cavity. You can use a hole saw which you use with a drill to do this. You'll want to stay towards the rear corner of the cavity since the firebox is shaped so that the rear corners should be open. You may want to cut your hole above the fireplace first so you can shine a flashlight down too get a better idea of where to drill.

Where are you planning to run your cables? Where is your equipment to be located?

I prefer over your fireplace. For my livingroom, it was the only place it could go.

In my setup, notice the white built-in cabinet to the right? That's for the components (receiver,

DVD, stb, etc....).

There is no attic above, so I went horizonal making holes through studs, then to the

upper right corner, then up the ceiling, and finally straight down to the cabinet. There is

a double flu and plenty of room behind the wall over the fireplace. I also had a clock

outlet with dedicated power to the electrical panel installed behind the TV.

Whenever anyone works on the TV or the TV area, simply put a thick blanket and some

plastic sheet over the entire area. The mantle will be fine.

Nice house!

I never understood why otherwise intelligent people would think that mounting a

flat-panel display above a fireplace mantle was a good idea. Who wants to crane

their neck looking upward to watch tv? Not me.

The most comfortable (and natural) viewing angles are either 1) straight ahead,

where your eyes are approximately level with the vertical center of the screen, or

2) where you gaze is angled slightly downward like reading a newspaper.
I guess I'm one of those otherwise intelligent people? For my application mounting above my fireplace is a good idea. Come sit on my couch or in my LazyBoy... I don't have to crane my neck to look at my tv. I sit 13-14 ft from the screen and it is not unpleasant to watch by any means.

Look at flatpanel's screen. Doesn't look like they need to crane their neck from their couch either.

Gee, doesn't look like housecor would have any problems with theirs either.

Hmm, I would say that I never understood why otherwise intelligent people would think that they know where the best place for me to mount my plasma is, but I won't.

a)keeps it away from grimy kid prints

b)very effective use of space in smaller rooms

c)WAF

d)can enjoy fireplace & TV at the same time

e)viewing is just as comfortable as any place else - given the right seating

f)everyone else who has seen it likes it

To each his own.

Jeff - I think you're right on the money. Your plan should actually work great since I can stand directly under the fireplace in the (currently unfinished) basement. The pictures of a typical firebox posted above really helped me visualize the space better. Our firebox appears to be shaped just like the pictures above so I assume there's room in the corner to run wires.

And I totally agree, viewing from the top first by cutting a small hole above the fireplace would be a good idea. I just have to be sure not to cut a hole bigger than the outlet I plan to place above the fireplace. (I don't want to have to do any repairs to the wood up there if at all possible).

I'm actually considering storing all equipment in the basement right below the fireplace to keep the runs short. Considering the basement has a nice little fireplace sized nook directly under the fireplace, I figure it's a great spot to create an equipment closet with this setup.

Thanks again for all the advice! My vision is starting to come together.

Sounds good and you are quite welcome. Post back if you have more questions and also make sure to keep us up to date with progress. Pics of the final setup would be cool too. Good luck and enjoy!
I am new here and wanted to know if mounting above the fireplace, what type of articulated mount is best? In other words are there certain brands that tilt downward more than others, as the flat panel (50") will be mounted so it appears to be resting on my mantel. The top edge of the panel will be about 20" below a 9ft ceiling. I have my sectional sofa about 16ft from the fireplace and chairs on either sides of the fireplace about 5ft from the wall. The way I figured it, even from the chairs, if the mount was swung to either side, these viewers would still be about 10 ft from the display. I hope this makes sense. Any input would be appreciated.

This thread is titled "Fireplace mount - Wiring recommendations? *Pics to clarify*." and is about a member's choice to mount over a fireplace and how to wire it. It will be difficult for you to get an answer to your question of which mount to choose by posting here.

Best thing to do is run a search. Up at the top right of the Flat Panel General section is a drop down box titled "Search this forum". You can use that tool to search for keywords pertaining to your question. There is also a link in my sig titled Better Searches! which may help you.

Below I have run the search "mount" for you:

Search through those threads and see if any of them answer your question. If not, you'll need to start a new thread.

Good luck!
