A 1999 paper discussing Firewire and HAVi is at:
http://www.havi.org/techinfo/docs/havi.pdf

It discusses things like how video, interactive menu sent from STB's to displays, recording commands all sent over Firewire. It discusses interconnection to the Internet, computers, home RF devices, and devices like BlueTooth.

The result is that DVI is unneeded for typical installations. DVI will probably still be needed for high end video processing equipment.

HAVi is designed to integrate and network all AV equipment in the house and easily implement functions that are difficult or impractical to do now. From the white paper it sounds like its going to make it much easier to implement a very sophisticated and useful AV home system.

The days may soon be over for using a bunch of remote controls or the clumsy universal remotes available now.
