First DIY Sub, best options for music?

1019 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Jack Gilvey
I'm thinking of trying to build a sub. My main goal is to have a very musical sub but wasn't sure what would be the best way to go about achieving my goal. I was thinking a sealed sub would be best but wanted some feedback on what amp and driver to go with. The Rythmik Servo sounded like a good choice but I'm sure there might be some other options I'm not aware of that would be good as well.

My budget is around $500 but could go higher if the benifit would be noticable. My current room is 14 by 30 but will be moved into a 14 by 12 room in the future. I have a Acoustech H-100 12" Sub at the moment.

Is the $500 for the amp and the driver - or the whole project (including wood, paint, etc)?
I was thinking $500 for the project but could increase the budget a few $100 if needed. I was planning on building my own box even though I don't have much experience. My father in law would be able to help me and he has all the needed tools. That said, if the price difference is not that much, I wouldn't be against buying a premade box from Partsexpress.
Sprtfan,

The Rythmik is a very musical sub The only other sub I have built that comes close is the Dayton RSS315HF-4 with the 500 watt amp. Key word here is close. The Rythmik goes lower, and just sounds more defined. IMHO opinion you can't go wrong with either, but the Rythmik is just a better sub for around the same cost.

Hope this helps.

I'm just getting started on this and I'm not 100% sure what everything means. I saw that the Rythmik has a Low, Med, and Hi Damping and that effected the "Q" value. The Rythmik had a Q value of .5 when high damping was selected. So would I be able to use Hi Damping when listening to music, then switch to low when watching a movie to get lower extention? With the Hi damping selected would I lose some db?
I think you have it right on the mark. Man, I need to get a second job so I can finally get the Rythmik.....
I would recommend looking at the sound splinter 15"

It will go lower, play louder and clearer. This is most likely going to be the driver that I use in my DIY.

Probably not. More than likely the settings are going to change the amount of boost in the midbass region, and have little if any impact on the lowest frequencies.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out as well. It seems to be pretty popular from what I have read so far.

I thought that probably wouldn't work that way but its good to know for sure.

Does Partsexpress still sell the 2.0cu and 3.0cu premade boxes? I was looking on their website and couldn't find them.

Interesting comparison...how did you employ the RSS315HF?
