First Draft of My design!!

476 Views 8 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  BroncoSport
Well here is the first draft. Looking for comments and advise. Below are some details that aren't real apparent in the drawing.

in the rear of the theater the second row of seating is on a 14" riser, 7" step leading up and down. I am struggling with the whole transition to the riser at the door. It just don’t seem to be coming together yet.... looks odd in the 3d rendering.

The stage is planned to be 7 to 10 inches high.

Ceiling is 9' high right now, but I have to build softits to cover plumbing and HVAC around the two sides and the front. Finished center ceiling will probably be close to 8' 8" or so in the center. Close to 12" lower on the sides.

The room in the rear is a planned DVD storage / A/V rack room. Not sure about putting a door on it or leaving it open to the theater. (the other little cubby hole in the lower right is to accommodate a restaurant booth I bought a long time ago.

The seating planned is 088's in straight rows.

Looking at a 125" diag screen (Carada probably)

I know I have plenty of planning yet to do, but man I cant wait to start banging nails!!!

Put a door on the storage room. Otherwise, the acoustics will be considerably more difficult to predict - besides the fact you'll have more wall to try to isolate ($$$).

I assume you are going to have steps inside the theater from the entry door and not outside.
Hey cool. Nice to see 3d renderings catching on. What software is that? Punch? You might also enjoy using blender. I did the renders in my gallery with it.

Where are the speakers going? Are the surrounds going into the column? What about the fronts? Will they be exposed on the stage?

What type of projector will you be using? It looks like the screen will be about 105" wide? If you go by the old 1.5 rule, you will need your seating to be another 2 feet or so back. But, I personally think that rule is a bit outdated for some of the higher res projectors of today. If you are going with something like the 4805, you might actually need 1.5-2.0x.

If the surrounds are going to be in the columns, are you worried about them being too close to the people on the end seats in the row? Looks like their heads may only be 3 feet from the speaker in some cases?

Overall, it looks like a pretty good design.

I would build the platform only for the back row. The platform width would be the width of the seats plus a couple of inches. The depth would be about twice the arm length. Place the first row on the floor and back it up to the front of the platform. This way you could walk in at ground level and step up on the platform between row 1 and 2. Also, place your platform on isolation blocks and fill the joist cavities with mineral wool or R30. Now you have a nice solid decoupled platform, which will enchance the low-end feel and save a lot of money on building material. Also there will be less modification to base board trim and columns where the platform would interact with the wall.

Just my opinion.
Looks good although the seating arrangement may need to change depending on the speaker setup to help balance the surrounds...

I was thinking pretty hard about a frech style door leading into the DVD storage / AV room.

The transition steps are inside the drawing right now, but I am having a hard time making the layout look right with the space I want to work with......

I am using Punch right now. Easy learning curve... for the most part.

The fronts will have to have either stands or shelves or built in cabinets of some kind, because I just ordered M&K S-150THX's all around. For the side surrounds I was thinking about a between the column's That was they would be between the rows and not cause a "hot spot".

I am probally going to use a 112" diag 1:85 screen, that would make the width 98.5 on the actual screen material itself. This will depend on the actual distance between the bottom edges of the sofit and if I want to have the ceiling inset smaller than the screen width ....probally :)

I am not really worried about the trim / carpendry part, because I can build anything (for the most part). Your idea is interesting, though. The reason I designed it like this so far was the give a better feel (visually) to the theater.
