Monsters Inc. makes a good first demo. CG films almost always look good. Once you calibrate your pj you'll be happier with live action films. Not to say that the initial WOW factor of a huge screen doesn't have it's own allure.

The first DVD that I viewed on my first digital projector was The Sound of Music in August 1999. (This "5 Star Collector's" Edition had just been released by Fox, and my whole family was dying to see it!)

What a disappointment! I almost took the projector back to the dealer that very day.

Fortunately, I soon discovered that all the edge-enhancement "halos", "blooming", and poor black levels were unique to that transfer.

The next DVD that I tried was The Mask of Zorro, and it looked like "film". (well ... close to it anyway!)

I ended up keeping the projector ... ;)

If you're asking for a good demo disk to try, almost all of the recent transfers that I've seen from the main studios have been magnificent, but "Seabiscuit" was a huge standout on my system (currently an Infocus X1).

Gattaga Superbit.

But check out the Digital Software forum's reference thread if you're looking for a good test.

Me too. 2001 isn't technically a reference transfer for demoing your pj, but it's the film that has fueled my desire to recreate a big screen movie experience in the home. If you haven't ever had the opportunity to see it on a big screen (I saw it several times on Cinerama screens in the early 70's) wear a diaper when you fire it up on whatever system you wind up with. :D :D
