I'm finally going to make the leap and build a HTPC. Trying to keep the total project cost under $400. Here's my planned build:

I already have the following:

500GB WD SATA hard drive for storage

40GB IBM IDE For Boot/OS

Samsung DVD burner

Windows 2005 MCE/XP

Display/Audio:

Mitsubishi WD-65513 1080i through DVI w/HDCP

Denon AVR with optical/coax digital input

Questions:

1: Are newer HTPC'S "plug and play", basically just hook the TV up and load the OS or will getting the DVI output to work correctly require some work? I have an old computer with a Geforce2 card and the DVI is difficult to get working properly, not sure if the newer systems have the same issues. I've tried looking at the owners manuals but they say nothing about setting up dual monitors.

2: I would like to use the system with my Harmony 688, I know this will require some sort of IR target. Not sure what to get.

3: What is a good wireless Keyboard/Mouse combo to use that's easy to use in a living room and doesn't cost too much. I would prefer they be integrated rather than 2 separate pieces.

I bought a Logitech Cordless Mediaboard Pro for my PS3, but since the web browser for the PS3 sucks, I now use the keyboard for my HTPC. I like.

Should be plug and play.

I think you want to control your computer with the Harmony 688, am I right?
Yes, you will need an IR target

Check out the Logitech Dinova Edge; I use it and it works reasonably well. Only problem it is relatively expensive, at a price of ~ $165; Amazon.com has a $30 rebate so you can get this for ~ $130--very good price for this.
