Meh- whatever. I imagine I'll be sticking with the old version but hey, this might be cool! Where'd you find that, anyway??

You must have been watching Keith Olbermann tonight. :)

He used the "New Coke" analogy, as well.

The same with Kiss. I guess they're all sharing, tonight.

Seriously, what is going on? I take it the Toons are gettng a facelift??

Hate to break it to you guys, but the Looney Toons characters haven't turned out anything worth watching since the late '50s!! So this latest travesty is nothing special. Heck, like I said, it may turn out to be interesting. just be thankful those box sets are coming out so we old farts can wallow in our nostalgia! (Seriously.)

I turned it on as he was interviewing Harry Shearer (that's where I got his quote). But I missed the "new Coke" line. That was my own thought. But it's so obvious that probably about half the people who become of aware of this would think of it.

I don't know, Fred.

ANIMANIACS is quite entertaining, at times. Very witty.

I think this is the first time I remember that I may have to have some disagreement with you, Fred.

I say to em make all the new cartoon characters they want. I have no problem with that. But leave any association with the classic cartoon figures out of it. All they're doing is exploiting those characters to push the new ones. I see that as no different from an Alien vs Predator, a Freddy vs Jason, TV seris spinoffs or any such nonsense. It's just another indication that we've entered into an era where not enough of these people know how to create something worthwhile of their own. They have to ride on the backs of other's creativity. And I'm agin it.

I give you credit, Bob. I wouldn't have thought of New Coke as an analogy.

Fred,

I agree. After a time, Bugs and Daffy became lame. I do believe it WAS the late 50's and you can tell where Mel Blanc's voice starts to go. They slow the characters down and they, unfortunately, seem to become dumber as a result.

Edit: Maybe when his son took over his voices?? Or before??

Such a shame.

Forgot about Animaniacs. I liked that show a lot actually but it didn't involve the original stable of characters. Much, anyway!

BTW, the cute Bugs of Friz Freling and Chuck Jones looks NOTHING like the character did when first introduced, so there is precedent for evolution. Although this seems a but extreme.

Again, where is this all coming from??

Exactly the point I made with my kids during the Countdown broadcast, that the Mickey Mouse of today is not the same as Steamboat Willy. There is always room for improvement, but this proposal is as Robert suggests, is not so much an evilutionary [pun intended] facelift as it is a remaking of an already established legend.

Yep. Sorry, but I'm breaking ranks on this one. However they mangle the characters has no bearing on my appreciation of the classic cartoons, and whining about it reeks of old-fart-ism. :D :D

Really, is this somehow more appalling than Space Jam??

I liked Space Jam even though it was a blatant attempt to profit off the popularity of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Michael Jordan. That counts, I'd say, as evolutionary. But, I watched it only because my kids wanted to at the time. Same with Animaniacs, Dexter's Laboratory, Ed, Edd and Eddie, etc. Still, I enjoyed them. Fortunately, my kids are older and I won't need to watch these new WB toons when they hit the air. But we're not so old that we haven't been watching Batman on DVD the last few nights together. :D

I didn't like Space Jam at all. It was torturous for me *lol* But actually, I thought Back In Action was pretty good. It went a fair way back toward the old feel and the voices were the best since Mel Blanc's heyday. Of course, I don't think it did very well at the box office, at least relatively speaking. Most of the stuff on Nickelodeon and especially Adult Swim I like a lot, especially Invader Zim. Most of today's really good animation involves horrible animating and terrific writing (Sealab 2021, for example, that does post-modern rewrites of a terrible Hanna-Barbera show. Like Space Ghost.)
