Hello, this is my first post here at AVS.

I was searching around the forum looking for some recommendations for my HDTV purchase. Here is a little history:

I jumped into the HDTV world in 2001 when I bought a Toshiba 40" from Best Buy. This unit was open box so I bought the repair plan. Later after a few repair calls, they offered me a full refund because they could not get parts to repair the unit. I sold my Best Buy Credit to my roommate which he used to buy a 65" Mitsu HDTV. I have held onto the money to buy my own HDTV when i moved out. Well that time has come...

I have a $1500 budget to purchase a new HD set and I had my eye on a 48" Mitsu from BB for $****(under budget). Well come to find out that this set is no longer available and the only Mitsu 48" they have at BB has an HD Tuner in it and is priced at (More money than I want to spend).

Can anyone make a recommendation on a good alternative to Mitsu? I liked Toshiba except for the lack of Discreet IR codes for my Pronto remote. Are Hitachi and Mitsubishi the same? Are Sony HDTV's any good compared to Mitsubishi?

Thanks for any input, I appreciate the advice.

Don't know about discreet IR codes, but would recommend Sony, Mitsubishi, Hitachi, or Panasonic crt based rptvs. Sony is right up there with Mits or Hitachi as far as I'm concerned, having owned one for 3 years.

Usually has among the best and most consistent "out of the box" pictures, little variation from set to set and good stability as far as pq changing during warmup and such. Put it in Pro mode and do a quick setup with AVIA and you're pretty much good to go. There's lots of good tweaking info on them, and they don't really need much in the first place.
