First projector ... On the right track?

1145 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Ahamay17
Over the next month, I am going to purchase my first projector and I wanted to see if you guys saw any issues or had any advice with my planned setup. Thanks in advance:

Projector:

EPSON 8350 (I live in a new house with a very good air filtration system so dust is not an issue in my house). Initially, I was leaning towards the Optoma HD20 but have since decided that the zoom and lens shift features of the Epson will be beneficial for my setup.

Screen:

Elite Screens Manual Pull Down Projection Screen, 16:9 Aspect Ratio-120in (Matte White) - 1.1 gain. (I am open to other suggestions in the sub $200 range).

Location:

Initially, I am setting up the projector in a bonus room in my house. The room is long and narrow, but it is about 15 foot wide so I was planning on putting the screen on one side of the room and installing a shelf (6-7 feet high) on the other wall of the room for the projector and other video devices. The sitting area will be near or at the back of the room as well, no closer than the recommended viewing distance of 12' but probably closer to 13'-14' feet away from the screen. I have 3 windows in the room but plan to install blackout blinds to see how well they block out the light. If I need to take more extreme measures on that front I can.

In the new few years, I plan to finish out my basement and have a dedicated theatre room with a fixed screen which is why I am not spending a lot on a screen at this time. I plan to use the projector with all of the obvious video sourcesXbox 360 for gaming and Netflix, HD DirectTV Sports, BluRay, etc.

I have done a lot of research and believe that I am on the right track but would appreciate any advice, tips, tricks, etc from those of you with experience in this area. This is a great forum with a ton of great info!

If LCD is what you're going with I've only heard great things about the 8350... I think you should be on the right track especially if this is your first projector, you could eventually move to DLP later on

I am really open to LCD or DLP but it seems like for under $1300, the Epson is my best option. Originally, I had planned around spending $1k but thought the Epson would be worth extending my budget a little. Are there any DLPs under $1300 that you would recommend over the Epson? (and why of course)... thanks.

If you need the mounting flexibility of the 8350 then that is likely your best choice as you will not find a DLP close to your price range that will match it in that regard... However if you want it simply for convenience and a DLP can fit your situation, and by your description it appears it can, you owe it to yourself to view them both if possible. If you don't see the RBE, and few do, the DLP's sharpness, especially during fast motion viewing like sports/action scenes can't be matched by any LCD in the same price range... Double your price range and the gap narrows, but the DLP still has the edge due to it's sharpness...

And yes you're on the right track...

Myself, I am partial to Mitsubishi, I've put 4 years, and 8000 hours (2nd lamp) on one that to this day still delivers...

To be clear...the lower the price of a projector (DLP) the more likely RBE can come into affect. The lesser expensive units use slower color wheels, with fewer segments. So though I agree that DLP is sharper and better for motion, it is well advised to view one before purchasing as to make sure there are no physiological issues.

The slight possibilty of him seeing RBE is why I suggested in my post he view both, and if RBE or the limited placement of DLP are an issue, then the 8350 is a good choice in his price range, however if neither are an issue, and because he mentioned sports and gaming, DLP will be his best choice....

Should you have also mentioned, to be clear.... the lower the price of a projector (LCD) the more likely motion blur and convergence issues are to come into affect, as both are issues even with higher end units...?
