first receiver and speaker purchase need advice please

5456 Views 71 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  aragorn764
hi all i just bought a Samsung 55" LED TV this weekend and would like to buy a receiver and speakers.

i dont need thousand dollar speakers and receiver i want something that is partially future proof and also good quality.

i was thinking of buying the Onkyo NR609 and the Fluance AVHTB+ Surround Sound Home Theater 5 Speaker System.

i had a question about the Fluance speakers.

they are 5 speakers can i buy 2 more of the Fluance shelf speakers and 2 subs and can i work as 7.2 for the Onkyo NR609?

i heard the Fluance speakers are pretty good in the future i would buy more expensive ones but for now i dont need them and want something that is good for music and movies.

anyone have any recommendations for speakers in that price range of about $200-$400?

i have been looking at reviews for the speakers and receiver and really like the network part of receiver since i have a Spotify account.

thanks in advance

the competition for the entry level speaker bundle you mentioned is this pair from Jamo at Vann's (an excellent on-line dealer).

the Jamo 506 bundle http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it.../jamo-s506hcs3

and yes, you can add two additional bookshelf speakers for the "rear" speakers in a 7.0 setup (if you have sufficient room behind the listening position for true rear speakers). And you can add any competent powered subwoofer (or two) to the mix when the budget supports the extra spending.

The Onk NR609 is a nice unit, with built-in networking and internet radio (which is a real plus).

Fluance is way too low end for my taste. Here are some better options

BTW, how big is your room and what mixture of music, movies, etc will you be listening to?

Thanks.
i like different type of music like Bob Marley, the Beatles, eminem, and rock or alternative. As for movies just about any type.

My room is about 25' x 20'

For that big of a room and your budget, you might want to start out with 2.0 system with some decent towers.
Another option, if you "have to remain cheap"...

BIC DV64/84 with DV62/52 surround speakers and the DV62CLRS. You'll only find them online at Amazon or Best Buy(online, not in store). They are one of the best bargains there is. The DV62 uses the same tweeter and woofer its predecessor, the V62 used, all the way back to the 80's. It is one of a handful of speakers to have a consistent 20+ year production run.
On your budget I would go with one of the Jamo setups, the 606 would be optimal since I believe the towers have built in subs that MIGHT get you by until you can get a real one.
my room is actually a bit smaller now that I found my measuring tape.

Its 18 x 14 I am laughing how off I was by just looking and thinking my room was that big

The S606 tower has built in 8" woofer but it isn't a subwoofer. The towers go down to about 40hz.

I would agree with all the Jamo recommendations. But as others have said, a sub would really be a great idea.

Another thought is three pairs of Energy CB-5's on sale for 80/pair and add a BIC F12. That would be a bit over budget at about 450 and using one the CB-5's as a center.

Just a thought.

thanks for suggestions.

i was thinking of going with this speaker set:
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it.../jamo-s606hcs3

and this subwoofer:
http://www.vanns.com/shop/servlet/it...2/jamo-sub-210

would this setup work great with the Onkyo NR609 i am thinking of getting?

and with this speaker/sub set am i locked into 5.1? because i cant find jamo speakers seprately to add just two more shelf sized jamo speakers and one more jamo sub to get 7.2 which the Onkyo NR609 supports.

nope you aren't locked in to only 5.1 matching surrounds is not that crucial as matching the front 3 speakers

Subwoofers do not need to be from the same speaker line. Also you don't have to use everything your receiver has to offer. Though feel free if you want. Your receiver will calibrate formthe speakers you do have so don't worry

You defniitely don't need a Jamo subwoofer. Get a sub from a dedicated sub maker, you'll get more bang for your buck that way. I saw the sub210 in my local Fry's the other day. It's really small, you'll want something larger than an 8" subwoofer. Get one decent sized sub like the Bic F12 and you probably wont need two subs unless you have a large room.

As far as surrounds they dont have to be Jamo. Ebay does sell the S602 speakers as a pair though if you want the same speakers as the other two.

You could also look at some of the other surround speakers Jamo has to offer.

thanks alot afrogt is that BIC sub really good? I didn't think to get a sub from a sub only maker because I thought best sound would come from same brand set.

Are the jamo speakers I am thinking of getting really good?

I might hold off on extra speakers and go for 5.1 for now.

So I think I might go with that jamo set with the onkyo nr609 and possibly the BIC sub.
Will those jamo 606 speakers and BIC f12 work to full potential with the onkyo nr 609?

And should I get squaretrade warranty for the 3 items?

Yes that's a great set-up.... Warranty is personal preference personally I always buy them just in case, but that is the worry-wort in me
great thanks I just wanted to make sure the speakers would be used to full potential with the onkyo receiver I picked.

For the money there are no better set or speakers and receiver IMO
And can I use banana plugs? I found some on monoprice but they have different types and what gauge speaker wire?

I also plan on buying wires from monoprice they seem to have great quality and good price.
