Hello

I recently recieved a hand me down speaker system and require a bit of help. The system I recieved is unfinsihed as I only have the 5 speakers(2 rear, 2 front, 1 center) and the reciever. I believed I still require a subwoofer and maybe an amplifier?

Here are the specs on the equipment I have.

The speakers are Energy and seem very similiar to these.

The reciever is a Denon AVR-2105.

This is my first time building a 5.1 surround system and would really appreciate any help or suggestions on subwoofers to go with.

Thanks for the help!

I am looking to spend no more than 500 dollars for the other components that I may need. I don't need anything to be top of the line or anything of that sort as the system I believe is already 6 or so years old.

If you already have a source (DVD, cable box, etc.) and cables, then YES you only need a sub. People have been promoting eD products for your pricerange. I would look into a used SVS cylinder sub as well. They regularly come up on audiogon and ebay. If you do end up needing cables, inexpensive ones can be had from monoprice .

So am I correct in the assumption that the only other component I require is a subwoofer?

Difolo,

You have a Denon AVR-2105 receiver. This unit combines a processor and an amp which will power your 5 surround speakers, so you can cross "amp" off your list of things to get... That is unless you were meaning amp to for the subwoofer? If the later is the case then most subs are "active" which means they have an amp built into them.

From what I can see all you need is an active sub (nearly all subs used here are active) and $500 should get you a pretty nice sub. I will let the sub experts guide you on which sub, but I would take a look at the stickie as there is some info they would need to help you.

If you can take people's word for it, then you should look at all the internet direct (ID) manufacturers' often talked about here. You would be looking at their entry level subs from companies like HSU, SVS, Elemental Designs (eD). If you up your budget, then you can step up to their larger, more powerful subs and add Epik to the list. Be warned, except for eD, the others have shipping charges added to your cost. Google these companies, their not hard to find. Also read some of the threads here. If you look into these, pay attention to the size. They look bigger in real life.

If you have to audition, then go to your local audio/electronics stores and look around. You should see all the usual suspects, Sony, JBL, Klipsch, Velodyne, Billy Bob's Whack-a-sub...

Difolo,

That link did not work. However, it appears that you have a set of Energy Take5 speakers. I had a set of those when they first came out probably 10yrs ago. They were glossy black, small and sounded great for such a small package. I used mine with an Energy 8" subwoofer that was fine in a small room but could have been larger. The room size is going to determine what you'll ultimately need for a subwoofer.

Since you will probably need cables/wires, etc, your overall budget for the subwoofer is actually less than $500. As someone already suggested, go to monoprice.com for your cables. You also indicated the age of the system is around 6yrs. Since I have experience with those speakers, I think a 10-12" subwoofer is what you are looking for. Check out these: http://www.parts-express.com/subwoofer-headquarters.cfm and look at their finished subs and their kits. A kit is actually easy to assemble and you can easily get 12" subwoofer within your budget. As said by the previous poster: an ED (Elemental Design), SVS or HSU would be nice, but honestly, I don't think you'll find one for under $500. I have two 260L eD 15" cylinder subs powered by a Behringer EP2500 that I built. However, the speaker drivers alone are $225.

I've never heard any of these, but their prices are right: http://www.thespeakercompany.com/Subwoofers-C17.aspx I'm pretty sure this is part of the company that owns Polk and Infinity.

Thank you all very much for the suggestions! I have been looking around and reading product reviews for some of the subs you've recommend and its gonna be hard to make a final decision.

Thanks again!
