My wife and I are building a new house (first time for us), and I'd like to design a theater room in the basement.

the room is ~12x16, and i have a pretty good idea of how I want it laid out, BUT, I'd still like a pro to go over it for things like speaker placement, and acoustic "issues" and help with screen-sizing, etc.

I've seen a couple names mentioned, but was wondering if there is anyone worth talking to withing 200 miles of here (Lincoln, Nebraska).

general thinking:

12x16, closed on both 16ft sides and one 12ft, mostly open at the back (onto larger rec-room

Movie Seating for 8 (might be a struggle with depth of 16ft)

100"+ screen

equipment "room" under adjacent staircase

"minimalist" aesthetics

8ft ceilings

only used for movies/sports, never for music...

where should I start... I will DIY most of the technical stuff, I'll hire-out the drywall finishing, carpet, and maybe the paint.

Welcome you are among friends!

Couple of pieces of feed back as you begin your planning. A reclining Plush HT seat (Berkline) requires 6-7 ft of space. With a 16 ft room this starts putting your first row kind of close to the screen.

The alternative is to pick smaller upright seating for the back row. Think of it as overflow seating for when you have guests over. You can get some refurbished "real theater seats" . They require 4 to 4 1/2 ft of space.

One thing that you can plan for at this stage is soundproofing/sound containment. Assuming you are going to build this room from scratch, you need to research framing techniques, wall construction methods and how to isolate the HVAC.

thanks!

the seats will be the lowest-budget items in this room (toddlers anyone?) and i like the old theater-seat idea... might have to put that into a later plan. I like upright seating anyway (agrees with my lower back).

the struggle I'm having is sifting all this advanced/technical stuff and getting good fundamentals out of it.

and I'll have to call Dan Kapps when I'm in Omaha on Monday and see what the deal is.

ok, new drawings... muahahahahaha...

new "theater room" looks like it will be closer to 18-9x13-4... its possible it could be compressed down to 12-6, but most importantly, the near 19-ft FINISHED measurement means lots of good things.

I also forgot to call Dan yesterday... crap!
