There's a new dvd called "Natural Splendors" with true 480P(30 frames) ultra dvd just released here in Singapore. I'll test it out and let everyone know the outcome.

480P(30) – PROGRESSIVE SCAN-480 LINES OF RESOLUTION AT 30 FRAMES PER SECOND FROM THE ULTRA DVD SERIES.

-With a *Frame Rate of 30 frames per second, an additional of 6 frames per second.

-480P(30) video has a *resolution of 720x480 pixels per frame, is encoded in the progressive scan format, and *includes approximately 25% more frames than film based progressive scan content 480P(24).

-*Digitally Mastered Widescreen Anamorphic Video, enhanced for 16:9 displays.

---------------------------------------------------------

480P(24) – THE RESOLUTION YOUR REGULAR DVDS.

-With a *Frame Rate of 24 frames per second.

There might be a couple of problems inherent from the regular DVD which runs with a frame rate of 24 frames per second:

1) Some film frames are shown for a longer period of time than others, causing judder, or jerkiness, that shows up especially in smooth pans.

2) If you freeze the video on the third or fourth video frame when there is motion in the picture you will see two separate images combined in a flickering mess.

----------------------------------------------------------

A major advantage of 480P(30) DVDs over 480P(24) DVDs:

- 480P(30) DVD provides additional temporal resolution resulting in a smoother look, particularly when high motion content is displayed. It also avoids juddering or jerkiness during motion sequences, or flicker when the DVD is paused that can occur with 480P(24) content,.

The additional 6 frames per second of content that can be included in the 480P(30) format allow the incorporation of fast action content into the program with a smoother look on the display.

This is a marketing snake oil. All NTSC video based DVDs have 60 fields per second divided into 30 frames (PAL has 50 fields and 25 frames). This DVD is simply video source and not film. And no DVD can have true progressive scan images on the disc. It is not part of the specification and a true progressive scan would not play on any DVD player. Only film base use 24fps.

This has been discussed here before. All DVD players will play disc like this.

As a matter of fact new Video Essentials disc coming out will also be completely progressive.

What a heck are you talking about?. This camera is available in US (even your link points to American website) so is RP91 and XP30 will be out next month.

How do you know that a lot of adult titles are 30p? Late night "research"? :D

Yep, research. ;)

Joe has stated that DVE will be 1080p/24. Actuallly, if you pick up Sound and Vision Home Theater Tune-up, some of the advanced test patters are 480p. If you play them on an interlaced display, it is flicker city. Try the focus pattern on an interlaced display, I dare you! :)
